Funny Smell in Air Conditioning

I have a strange smell coming out of the air conditioning vents. When I run the a/c on full cold, there is no smell at all. As soon as I kick up the button one notch warmer, a very distinct smell comes out of the vents. Does anyone have this problem and any resolution?

I wish I could post a scratch-n-sniff jpg.

It could be cosmoline which will eventually burn off. Or depending on the miles on the car the cabin filter may need changing (there is a "How to" post on this site). Welcome to the site by the way.

Please no scratch and sniff jpg.

I have seen lots of discussions on here about the AC filters so you might try doing a search on that to see if other people chose to change their filters due to an odor problem.

Hope this helps and clears the air

Get the Charcoal carbin filter. In the short term you might pull the filter and blow it off. Most likely it has collected dead leaves and so when the AC is on, the lower tempeture is masking the decay.

I've had the same experience. The smell doesn't linger, though. I look at it as one of my car's quirks....

Don't really have any clue as to why this happens.

Not sure this applies to others, but my '00 Boxster S would do this, my wife's 04 Cayenne Turbo and on rare occasions, my '06 Cayman S get some mildew in the a/c HEPA filter, likely from getting wet from condensation. Our mechanic suggested switching off the compressor just before arriving at our destination (the ECO button) to allow the filter to dry out, and this has seemed to work. I do like the charcoal filter idea, though.
