Unhappy Rattle In Cabin

Just got back from the dealership. No luck in fixing this. I have a high pitched rattle in the cabin caused by road vibration. I don't hear it when stopped and the engine revs does not affect it. In sounds like the cabin itself is making the noise. It does not seem to be coming from the tires. I adjusted the latch back rubber stops. I removed the black privacy skirt. I took everything out of the back. I hear it with the stereo on and off. Bobby, my mechanic, pulled the engine cover and inspected the gasket. It is still there and very annoying. Has anyone else noticed this? Any ideas?

Is this rattle coming from any one area? Such as driver or passenger side, front to back, etc? If you can give us more information on the rattle's location we might be able to help more. I've had a couple of rattles myself, and one was on the drivers door that ended up being a loose bolt, and the other was passenger side behind the seat that ended up being a clip that had come loose behind the seatbelt as well as the rear quarter glass that needed adjusting.

Give us a little more detail and perhaps we can be of more help. There have been several threads on rattle complaints so you might also look around the complaints section to find something that is close to what you are experiencing.

Let us know and good luck.

It seems to be behind the seats and I hear it more in my right ear while driving.

That sounds like the rattle I had where they had to adjust and tighten the rear quarter glass and re-attach a clip that had come loose in the seat belt housing. Annoying as hell.

Take the service adviser out for a drive with you so that they can hear the noise as well. This might help with the diagnosis as well as a fix.

Thanks for the help on this TX. I really appreciate it. I hope that is the problem. It has been hard to locate. I had the mechanic out with me for about 30 minutes this morning with no joy. Any idea which one was making the rattle? My back glass seems to be tight and aligned properly.

On this 30 minute drive, did the rattle not present itself, or could the 2 of you not locate it?

I'm not sure which one was making the rattle, that is just what they said to me when I picked up the car. I didn't notice the glass being positioned wrong, but the rattle is gone so I'm a happy camper.

One other thing you might check is the Oil fill door. Sometimes that can become loose and rattle you might check to make sure the filler cap is on tight and that the door is closed all the way.

Hey Tx-KmanS...

I have isolated my rattle to the left rear quater glass...Similar to urs...Is it easy to adjust and fix, or do you think it would best be done at the dealers...?

I checked the oil and antifreeze caps and door. The mechanic could not hear it. To me, it is very annoying. lol....I will take your advice and take the service advisor out next Friday. I will have him check the back glass and the seat belt housing.

I'd personally take it to the dealer and point out the location to them. I wouldn't know exactly what to look for since I didn't watch them fix it.

Today was my second visit on my rattle. First time they could not reproduce it. I had one day when it was solidly rattling so I took it into the dealer so the service writer could at least verify that it existed. We booked my second appointment for today.

Of course - today was a non-rattle day for the car. It didn't rattle the whole drive to the dealership. They called me at 4PM to say they couldn't get the car to rattle - please pick it up.

I drove it off the lot and the rattle was there. I did a 180 and got a tech to drive with me. At 3800 RPM it was constant. He did the pat-and-poke routine and identified it.

The passenger side has a small compartment for storage beside the engine. The lid to the compartment was rattling. He could stop it by holding on to it.

You can see the offending rattler in the pictures.

It goes back on Monday for the fix.

DF.

Thanx Tx....Will take it to the dealers yet again....Hope its "rattle day"....

To those who wants to eliminate seal belt cause -- just under the small plastic cover where the seat belt goes in,; there is a hollow bolt....For some it has been found to be loose....Can be fixed easily....Be careful with the tightening as it can easily break.
