anyone else notice after awhile their cup holder trip piece not match up with the rest of the trim? its almost like a heavy drink made the cupholder assembly sag. there is now about a 3/4" gap above the top of the trim.

I could be wrong, but I believe the original post is referring to how poorly the central piece of the three piece cup holder cover trim aligns with the neighboring trim. I had this problem (although my misalignment was only 1.5 or 2 mm and not 3/4" as reported) and my dealer replaced my entire cup holder assembly as a unit under warranty.
The new cup holder assembly aligns perfectly and I'm happy that I had it changed (they provided to me the assembly, I swapped it). By the way, I disassembled the original cup holder mechanism to see if there was an internal adjustment however there wasn't. One more thing, your dealer may allow you to keep the external silver trim pieces (three pieces) for you to keep as spares in the event that yours ever get scratched!
Regards,
Joe

Thanks Joe, I was really hoping to help SPrincess's issue.
The FAQ you refer to is to prevent lateral movement of the cupholder arm; however the problem SPrincess indicates is the weakness of the ratcheting grip mechanism, which is not addressed in the FAQ- at least that is my read.
I am on my second cupholder mechanism and this one has developed the gap that is discussed above. I had asked my dealer to take care of it along with a myriad of other things, but it was missed. I'll have it taken care of next time.
