Brake "Glaze?"

So I've been noticed my Cayman's brakes squeal/squeak when I come to a stop- moreso as I approach a complete stop.

I called my dealer's service dept., asking why my brakes are squeaking, considering I have only ~800 miles on it.

The service advisor said there's something called "brake glaze" on the car- that if I've been driving and stopping the car gingerly, the brakes will glaze. He said to fix the problem (he also said this is what they'd do if I brought the car in for service) is to take the car around the block, make sure no one is behind you, and stomp on the brakes hard a few times. He recommended that I perform this "fix" myself.

So I did, and it worked.

WTF?

It's not meant to be driven like a little old lady! They provide a more aggressive pad than a Camry would have, for instance. Aggressive pads tend to do that.

I believe glazing your pads usually only occurs when your rotors are very hot and you apply the brake pads for a prolonged period without enough force to induce friction wear (like at a stoplight). You would have had to be braking pretty hard to begin with to heat your rotors up enough to cause the glazing.

I am not surprised. I read that you are better off with shorter, but harder, braking events as that keeps the temperature down on the rotors. Sounds funny, but more time off the brakes, the heat can dissapate given more time to do so. Overall, the brakes can handle very heavy application, so giving them a workout will often help.

So has anyone experienced their brakes "squealing" while the car was still within the break-in period? -Especially the people chiming in about working the brakes harder?
