Cayman Alcantara Headliner Problems

I just bought a 2008 PDE-1 which comes standard with Alcantara headliner. This thing never ceases rattling, and when taken to dealership, was informed that Porsche has had problems with their adhesives. I checked every car on the lot that had alcantara headliners (tt's, gt3, gt2, etc), and every single one of them had the same problem.

It seems that the standard headliner is installed around a foam batting. When the alcantara one is installed, they rip out the foam insulated standard headliner, and wrap alcantara around some backing fiberboard, and then stick it back up into the roof. Without the foam, it just bangs against the roof bracing members non-stop. If configuring standard Cayman, one woudl have to pay additional $1,600 to have their car ruined! lol

The service mgr at my dealership is ordering new headliner from Porsche, but i keep telling them.."the headliner is not defective, the methodology is ill-conceived and rife with design flaws". In 2-3 months, we will see who is correct. Anyone else notice this problem?

If I have said it once I have said it a hundred times on this site.....I HATE ALCANTARA ANYTHING. The material downright stinks and I have no idea what any car mfr. is thinking using the stuff. Granted your post has to do with the attachment and not the material....but just the same, I would RUN from anything made of this material.

I'm sorry for asking, but why can't they --at the very least-- put a thin layer of foam batting on the back of the fiber board?

your dealer is lying to you.
i have alcantera roof liner on 9 of my porsches. NONE of them has any rattles. tell them to fix it. if they can't find another dealer.

today's dealer just REPLACE parts, they dont spend the time or use the few remaining brain cells they have to FIX things.

EVERYTHING can be fixed. replacement often do not solve prob. FIX it.

Well, the dealer wasnt lying about all the other ones on the lot rattling, i chekced that myself. However, i do agree that it is ridiculous that they order a new one from Germany, and just dont remove the headliner and stick some foam up there and resolve the problem themselves.

I find it real curious that no one else is expereincing this problem. If i reach up behind and press upon the headliner, there is a "clearance" between it and the roof itself. It is in this space that the problem resides....the material in which the alacantara is wrapped around is in constant motion with road vibrations...and these vibrations have it vibrating against the roof, creating a non-stop cacaphony of sound.

It is ironic though that every other car on teh lot had this same "clearance space", and thus, subject to the same rattling. Whereas all other normnally aspirated roofs (lol) had thick inner lining of foam. Kinda makes me wonder if the dealer themselves is doing the headliners? It IS definately very annopying..squeaks and rattles being my #1 pet peeve in a car.

Err....fully loaded PDE-1 with 626 miles on it for 80K anyone?

Thats what i told them to do, but they insisted on ordering new one from Germany. I had no choice but to let them handle it THEIR way since it is warranty item at their expense. If their way gives me no 'fix', then i will insist they do my way.

Hmm...first time I have heard of this. Maybe a blessing in disguise for me. I decided not to order the OEM alcantara headliner. Instead I'm going to cover mine myself. That way I can also cover the A-pillars at the same time to ensure the color matches.

Why do you dislike alcantara so much?? Its fantastic on seat inserts.....stops you from sliding all over the place.

My M5 had an Alcantara headliner and I loved it. No problems whatsoever and IMO it was a much nicer touch than than just a cloth headliner. Would I pay a few grand for this? Maybe not, but it was standard and I liked it.
