But, it does raise the question what is it? Could it be residue from the protective film used in transport.

perhaps this is the case, coz I'm still having a hard time to think this is damaged. It's far more troublesome to paint it like that instead of just painting the whole door. I'd suggest taking it to a body shop first so that you can hear an opinion other than the dealer's

Here is a photo I took of my car when it arrived. On mine anyway the film did not go that high on the door.

Rules that out, maybe a buildup of wax. Some waxes can be pretty hard to remove after sitting awhile.

I still don't think it's primer. It appears to be on top of the paint. Only a half wit would prime the door reinstall the molding then paint.

After a much closer inspection, it is plastic film from transport. It is a total bitch to try to get off from under the window trim.
