Question 2006 Cayman S - AC Compressor leak

I have a 2006 Cayman S with 6500 miles. The air conditioner compressor was found to be leaking refrigerant. With lack of AC use, would the compressor gasket tend to dry up and eventually fail? What could cause an AC compressor to spring a leak at 2yrs/6500 miles? Some insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not using the AC would allow seals to dry up, just like you stated.

I sprung an O ring leak in one of the AC hoses within three months of owning the car. Evendently the o ring did not seat well in its well during assenbly.

Did they tell you it was the compressor or a hose connection?

Yes, as jaica indicated, you must use the system regularly. However, unless you're turning the system off, it's almost always running.

I had suffered with a leaking system for a year. The system blew warm air after 1 month, and again at 7 months. The dealer recharged the system and each time they added dye. At the 1-year service they found the leak - at the front; a bad hose. Knock on wood - three months and counting, it's still working.

By "turning the system off", do you mean using the ECO button?

I've been driving with ECO button pressed and lit.

I thought it would increase some HP performance as someone stated in a thread. Guess I'll turn it off and blast the AC from now on.

Just got the news from Porsche service dept that both the AC compressor and the hose connection were replaced. The compressor was replaced first, but the system still wouldn't hold a charge. Initially, on visual inspection, the compressor appeared to be leaking. Closer inspection indicated that the dye/fluid were discharging from the hose, which prompted replacement of the hose connection. I have now have a new AC system that hopefully will last.

Back in the early 90's my girlfriend at that time had a brand new Nissan 240SX. At 2k miles the pressure hose stripped out of the compressor and spewed every ounce of freon and oil out in 3 seconds,.....I was riding in it at the time, man what a site. Looked like the whole car was about to explode.

Service mgr. said the hose was crossthreaded into the compressor at the factory. Stuff like this happens. New compressor and hose and it was perfect from then on.
