Question Airbags get scared at 120mph

Hi,

I have just done my first track days in my 2006 CS. When I exceed 120mph on the straight, a check airbag warning message comes up on the lcd panel in the center of the dash. I can clear it with the stalk control but, it pops up again the next time I exceed 120mph, on every lap if I am going that fast.

I have a passenger airbag switch but, the error pops up no matter how it is set.

Since I am trying to use the display for the chrono to time my laps this is even more annoying. Could someone please tell me if this is a feature or a bug?

thanks, Tim

I will test this in my CS tomorrow. I figure I can show this post to the CHP if I get pulled over and state it is a safety issue.

OK, I'm kidding. Please don't start the flame war.

Oh please do. Just say you are an NTSB inspector doing a test drive.

The only time I ever got "caught" speeding in California was in the reversing portion of my driver's test 30 years ago. Perfect score otherwise. I don't think it's on my record.

That hasn't happened in my CS, or any of the other CSs I've been in on track. I also don't remember anyone else mentioning that on CC.

Are you possibly experiencing another variant of the known issue in which a Cayman passenger seat back gets torqued so as to disrupt the weight sensor in the seat bottom? If the seat is pushed too far back against the firewall, the seat weight sensor will think there is someone sitting in the seat without their seatbelt on. This causes the airbag to be disabled. This has been widely discussed on this forum. However, the usual symptom is the yellow airbag warning on the center console lighting up.

Try moving the passenger seat forward a bit and see if the problem disappears.

If that doesn't change anything, make sure all the electrical connectors under both seats are mated tightly. Be sure that you leave the ignition off (key removed to be sure) while you are fiddling with airbag sensors and connectors. You don't want to get a facefull of airbag while sitting in your garage!

L8apx,

Thanks for these troubleshooting tips. I will have the car on the track tomorrow and will give your suggestion a try.
