My Cayman bled to death........

actually it didn't die but I had to put her to sleep or it would have................

I was driving on the highway saturday when after 45 mins of trip the low coolant level warning came on.
At first I thought that it may have simply reache dthe minimum but when I stopped to check at the first emergency area I noticed blood dripping from the front left corner.......
I managed to reach the first gas station a few km down the road and sadly called the assistance wich sent me a truck for towing.....meanwhile the red liquid (yes my coolant is red) slowly but inevitably stained the gas station pavement. It really lokked like it had been stabbed in the back, actually under the belly.....

It turns out that a hose unclamped itself near the front left radiator.

I was also told that it's been seen especially on 997 tt lately...... apparently the clamps come loose....what surprises me is that he has to order a new hose as well.....hmmm I'll check it out when I'll pick up the car......

Bad thing is that I was driving too a friends wedding some 300 km from home and I actually missed it, I only managed to get there at 9 pm.

By the way I wasn't given any sort of courtesy car as on the weekends the rentals are closed except for airports which were out of reach for my destination. I would have had to pay for the rental anyway, they only offered me a train ticket to get back home.......

No comment.....

What year is your Cayman? Is it a 2.7 or S?

I have been experiencing the scent of coolant now and then right after driving my car from home to work, but have not seen any leak. I was wondering could the 'underbelly' lining be keeping the coolant leak from passing. Maybe I should take it to the dealer.....

I also have been smelling the scent of coolant from time to time. This is not comforting to know that this clamp may go. I may replace this clamp before it has a chance to do me in. Caymans74 could you give a little more detail on the location of this clamp and any other helpful info? Thanks.

My car is an S.

The hose which came loose is the one running under the car and connecting to the front left radiator, I'm not sure if it has disconnected at the radiator or at a joint before it but it was dripping in front of the wheel......

This was no dripping though, it was a major spill which emptied the system in minutes....with the engine off and no pressure.....

Maybe the coolant smell comes from the back as per similar problems already discussed in the forum regarding the tank in the engine bay......or the recall about the engine studs braking the hose check it out....

I'd strongly recommend taking it to the dealer for a look-see. The cooling system is supposed to be completely sealed; you test it by pressurizing it with an air pump. If you smell coolant there's almost certainly a problem.
