Clutch not fully engaging on first shifts when cold?

This is somewhat of a weird one.

I start the car, back out of my driveway, no issues.

I drive down the street, no issues.

I stop at the end of the street, have the clutch in, pull away.

I get going, but about a half second after taking my foot off the clutch, I feel the car "catch" as if the clutch wasn't quite released all the way when I took my foot off the clutch pedal (which was at the top of its travel.)

The next stop sign, I feel somewhat of the same thing.

But for the balance of my city street and highway mix drive to work, I don't feel it at all.

Is it just a character perhaps of the engine when cold, or am I really feeling the clutch not engage fully?

The car was built in February, picked up in April, and has about 275 miles on it, so it shouldn't have been subject to the master cylinder service action.

I can't imagine even mentioning this to the dealer, as I can guarantee you at the end of the day it would come back marked "cannot reproduce"…

I would take it in and have it looked at ASAP. Your car may have a bad slave cylinder. Continuing to operate it like that will damage your clutch for good.

If it were the slave cylinder why would every shift but those first two or three each feel perfectly fine? (Also, I only feel it when I'm getting going in first; I don't feel the same hesitation/grab on shifts into second or third.)

Also I don't understand why it would prevent the clutch from engaging fully; a bad slave cylinder should prevent me from fully disengaging the clutch, no?

To be perfectly honest, I think it may actually be what's described in this thread, given it does go away if the car is anything but stone cold.

I just know from past experience because it does only happen on the first few pulls away from a stop in first when cold both dealers near me would likely return the car as "cannot reproduce," especially if their techs like to rev the engine to 4K and drop the clutch.

Hard to say. Upon reading your original post again, I'm thinking that you are just experiencing a cold engine/flywheel, not clutch problems.

But, when the slave fails, it fails opposite of what you are thinking. The piston gets stuck in it's cylinder upong release causing the clutch to get stuck partially engaged or fully dissengaged. But your build date suggests you have the new corrected slave cylinder.

If you do go to the dealership on this, ask them to check if your car is affected by workshop campaign W802.

Thanks.

To try to clarify what I feel, when I pull out onto the street when everything is cold, my foot is off the clutch pedal and everything feels normal, but about a half second later it feels as if the clutch is making more solid contact accompanied by what feels like a little jerk.

I don't feel/see the clutch slipping as far as RPMs revving or anything like that, and I'd never think anything was wrong were it not for that more solid hookup feel about a half second after my foot is off the clutch pedal.

It goes away completely after things are warmed up, and I don't feel anything comparable when backing out of my garage or starting down my street.

It's just the first shift after being stopped at a stop sign with the clutch pedal down, but everything is still cold so in theory it could be the clutch or the car bits just being warmed up.

The first time it happened I thought I had just slipped the tires a bit because they were cold, but as it's been in the 80s here recently I don't think that's the issue.

then it might have something to do with the way the engine is managed when its cold.

clutch problems should pesist and be reproduceable.
