Unhappy New clutch woes

I know there have been manner posts re clutch problems (put one in two days ago, but it was lost in the "shuffle"). I have 9k on my '07 CS with one DE last Nov. and two AX last year.

A few days ago, I heard this strange squeak when the pedal was depressed (engine off), called to take it in today. Yesterday, after sitting for the time to play a round of golf in 90 degree weather, I got in a found the pedal with almost no play... it would catch 1/2" off the floor (oh s**t!). As I drove home, it got better, but still had a funny feel in the pedal, kind of like sand on release. Took it in today and they are keeping it as something serious is wrong with either the clutch or pressure plate. The really bad news is that they said they have to get permission from Porsche to repair/replace under warranty since the clutch is a "wear item"! I don't doubt that it will be covered with such low mileage, but you never know. While thinking about this, I recounted 21 manual trans cars I've owned over the years and this is the very first time I've had a problem with a clutch. This isn't a "rap" against Porsche, but I think I've established my skill at using a clutch over the years. If anyone has had a similar issue and the clutch at relatively low mileage wasn't covered, I'd like to hear about it to be prepared to protest if necessary.

Don't worry! All clutch issues like yours have been fully covered by Porsche. They will fix the issue (probably with the pressure plate/bolts) and inspect your clutch and if they notice it has been unusually worn because of the issue, they will replace your clutch. Porsche isn't the kind of company that leaves a customer hanging after the purchase because they are after long-term, repeat customers.

Thanks for the support... I hope you are correct in your thoughts. It will help me sleep a little better tonight!

I would be willing to bet that the "checking" with Porsche is simply a formality because they do consider the clutch a wear item... if it's prematurely worn because of this defect - and it does sound like something's not quite right - it will be a warranty replacement. I don't think you have too much to worry about.

Seamus,
I absolutely agree with suneet's comment. Porsche will pick up the cost of the repair.
I had the EXACT same problem you are reporting, and it was corrected free of charge within two days.
By the way, in my case, the problem was not caused by the infamous undertorqued pressure plate bolts, as was initially assumed, but an internal leak in the slave cylinder (also well-reported on this site), which took barely half an hour to replace.
My clutch has never been better than after the fix!

I know exactly how you feel now, but in retrospect, I hope you will find that this was no reason to lose any sleep over...

Smile Update

If inquiring minds want to know... or not, I got my car back today after driving a white CS Tip (loaner) since Friday. First the good news is that everything was covered by warranty as a few of you assured me would be the case.
The clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing were replaced and the flywheel resurfaced. According to the mechanic, apparently BEFORE I had the master slave unit replaced last fall (and it was one of the very first here since I was at the dealer when the TSB came in), some damage occurred to the clutch and throwout bearing. Replacement of the master slave slowed the damage down but what was done was done. The parts for this were $798 that I could see on the dealers copy. Labor charges had not been added in as yet.
In any event, I have my baby back and it feels sooo good.

Unhappy Oh, no!

Two days and 90 miles later, I now have a persistent Check Engine light. I checked the normal thing, the gas cap, and looked around the car and can see nothing amiss. It seems to run just fine, no hesitation, etc. But, now it sits in the garage until I can call in the morning. Instead of going over there, Hilton Head (42 miles each way), I'm going to tell them to come get it and bring me a loaner (which they normally do). It's just a royal pain in my rear end. I had planned to run a DE this weekend, but cancelled because of the clutch woe. I had hoped for more reliability than this! I've always given others the advice when asked about which car to buy, "a car you like to drive that isn't in the shop all the time." Now, I still have the first half, but the second part is starting to creep in. My CS is 1 year and 8 days old with only 11k miles... I expected better.

PCNA backs us up?????

I will respectfully disagree with the prior learned comments as Porsche covering known defects.

My 993 had the well known, D.O.T. investigated MAJOR issue with engine fires from defective wiring harnesses. When it was delivered, it caught fire in my driveway!. Park Place took it back to dealership, I got major $$ break and 100k warranty. At 130k it did it again, shorting out and killing the battery and risking another fire. I live 2 hours away from Dallas, and despite the very diligent efforts of Park Place service, the PCNA rep REFUSED to pay the expensive tow charge and REFUSED to even talk to me about it. PCNA never responded to my letters either.

Bottom line: PCNA did not impress me with any customer care. That said, I still went back to Park Place (great shop!) and bought my new Cayman. So far, no major issues with this one, and I like it better than the 993 (despite the strange greenish liquid that flows around in it)

Just my 2 cents.

Got the car back and all seemed well UNTIL the CEL returned yesterday, 12 miles after it's return (54 after it left HH). The report on the first CEL was a "bad O2 sensor perhaps caused by bad gas." That's BS! I use the same gas (Amoco/BP prem.) in both the CS and the MB CLS without issue... from the same station since purchase except for trips, but always premium. I "assume" (that word) that they had to drop the entire drive train to replace the clutch, pressure plate, bearing and resurface the fly wheel. So, I suspect that when re-assembled, something was missed, left unattached or broken. But you'd think the computer would show what it is??????

P of HH called this morning... now it seems the left CAT is being blamed for the CEL, not the O2 sensor? Seems like "hunt & peck". Meanwhile, I now driving an '01 Boxster, red, with 65k on it. It sure ain't a CS!
