Question Has your Cayman ever turned on and vented/cooled down while off?

Something strange happened yesterday and i am not sure if this is normal for the Cayman or Porsche. While trying to setup garage opener to the home link and adjusting my tire pressure to clear my TPMS errors i had a strange thing happened. When i was done working on the car in my garage the car was off and about 20min after i locked my car the fan turned on and vented warm air throught the side vents for about 30sec and turned back off. I live in Arizona and it did reach over 100 degrees yesterday. Is this normal??

Any comments appreciated. i did a search to see if anyone posted something similiar but didnt have much luck.

Rob

It's normal Especially after a hard drive or in hot temperatures. It freaked me out the first time too! I believe it is done to channel heat out of the engine bay so that it doesn't all spread around the cabin.

Happned on both my old 05 Boxster and my 07 Cayman. In fact the manual mentions it as a cautionary note.

Thanks for the heads up. The only main reason i freaked out is because i had not driven the car afternoon when it did it. I will dig around the manual to read the details.

Yep-
Mine suddenly vented for about 30 seconds. It had been parked and turned off for about 1/2 hour before this happened. It's OK from what I've heard.

NO.

In Summer its hot here and the fan operates a LOT. Its most annoying because its so loud, but its never operated when the engine is off for me. If I switch the engine off the fan shuts off straight away and does not keep going (if it was running at the time). Nor has it self started.

I would be very concerned if the fan went on at its own accord. That would be a safety issue if you were working on the car!

I'm pretty certain the fan will only go off on its own accord several minutes after the car has been locked with no activity; if you were working on the car's engine it would surely be unlocked and most probably open unless you were under it. Just to cover its butt, Porsche has included the following warning in the manual:

Risk of injury. After the engine is switched
off, the engine-compartment temperatures
is monitored for approx. 30 minutes. During
this period, and depending on temperature,
the engine-compartment blower may contin-
ue to run or start to run.
Carry out work in these areas only with the
engine off and exercise extreme caution.

Thanks Suneet. Mystery solved. What you stated is pretty much what happened.

I will now start reading my manual in more detail than just skim through the pages.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies...

Happened to me the first time I got my car home, and oddly not since (or at least I haven't heard it do so.)

I was a bit surprised when my 2003 Boxster S didn't do it so it wasn't surprising they brought the electric fan to the 987.

I love this car but I HATE this friggin fan. I like to drive with the windows down and if I have already driven the car and start it up again the fan come on making that annoying sound. Once I'm up to speed I don't notice it, but driving through the neighborhood or through parking lots with the fan running drives me nuts because its sooo loud. Maybe I have a defective fan? I'd buy an after market replacement if one were available and it wasn't as loud.
