Hatch area "ticky" rattle

OK, with 270 miles on the clock I've gone from joy to "what the hell is that?"

Basically over any cracks or such in the road I'm getting a ticky/tacky rattle from the right rear of the rear hatch area.

I've checked the obvious things - it's not the storage cubbys on either side, and pressing on the oil/water cover in the hatch area doesn't seem to make the sound.

I've also tried removing the luggage cover - no difference.

I thought that it might have simply been the rubber seals around the hatch drying out and making noise (as that's what it sounds like - it's not a rattle per se but more of a ticky noise, almost like an tape coming off noise).

Alas, I should have remembered the hell of a rattly hatch from my Audi TT, which is why I was glad my Boxster had a trunk.

So no more rattles and squeaks from my roof, but now the hatch noises are back.

On mine I have/had plastic squeaking noises coming from the right strut cover. It's the large plastic piece with the round turrent shape. If I grab the piece any try to move it back and forth, then it would make the noise. It doesn't appear to be loose, but I guess it's loose enough to make those sounds.

The drivers side cover doesn't make a sound.

Now that the weather has gone from cold to hot in the Northeast, the sound has mostly faded away probably due to the plastic expanding.

Take it to the dealership and let them fix it. Your car should not rattle or creek.

If it is indeed coming from the rear hatch compartment, you might check the plastic cover around the third brake light. I seem to remember reading that another member had a similar rattle and it turned out being that plastic piece around the brake light. It had come loose and rattled against the glass.

Just a thought, but I would take it in to the dealer and have them fix it.

Not to be snide, but you're funny.

I've been through this with dealers and PCNA before with my Boxster:

1) Visit one - "cannot reproduce"
2) Visit two - rattle is not fixed
3) Visit three - PCNA regional manager declares the car is working "as designed" meaning Porsche will not pay for any further rattle-related repairs.

I can scan the letter PCNA sent me in 2003 regarding my Boxster's rattles if you'd like proof.

When it comes to rattles, except for people with exceptional service departments or those who just get lucky, the only way they get fixed is if you track them down and alleviate them yourself.

Sad, but true in my experience.

I HAD a rattling problem in the trunk area for a long time, it sounded like loose speaker cover. I brought the car back to the dealer 3 times, but the rattling was still there. So finally I got so fed up, I started to take all the removable parts out of the trunk, including struts that hold up the lid, one at a time. But I still could not locate the source of the problem. I was so fed up that I was about to push the car off a cliff. Finally I took my car to an independent mechanic and told him to find and fix the problem at any cost.
After 7 hrs and $400 later, they found the culprit. It was the right rear light, it wasn't mounted properly. It could be the guy who tinted my light and did not install it back properly. But who kowns and who cares.
Now my car is rattle free, and I love my car again!

Put on a loud aftermarket exhaust, drive like stink - and your rattles will no longer worry you.

Does anyone know more about the rear hatch counter-weight issue and how it might be related to this noise?

I know this is in no way related to the trunk clunk, particularly as my car was made after the Porsche fix should have already gone into production.

Mine is definitely coming from a plastic or rubber piece.

I think that might be the cause of mine as well.

If you figure out a way to make it quiet down, please let me know.

Hey Bill,

Let the hatch area sit in the sun for a bit to heat things up, then go for a drive and see if the noise is there.

When I had my engine cover off, I did see more area around this part where I could have probably shimed with felt tape, but my noise was gone by this point. Just pry the carpeted piece off and you'll see what I mean.

Too bad I didn't take a better pict of the side plastic pieces...

My Cayman was exposed! (engine cover removal)

Looking at the shock tower area again, that is one big plastic piece, wow.

Feeling around it may even be the plastic piece that goes up behind the tower to meet the other plastic trim that's the cause of the noise (I'll have to stuff some extra felt in there.)

Any idea how these plastic bits come off? It looks like quite the involved process as there isn't room for them to "pop" off as far as I can tell…

I have the exact same problem but mine hasn't gotten any better as it has gotten warmer. They've tried felting it twice now and my car is now at the dealership for the 3rd time to try and get rid of this sound once and for all. Last time it was silenced for all of ~15 miles and then it returned.

Edit: Bill I wish I knew how those trim pieces came off. I'm sure if I tried I would end up breaking something.

First post so hope this goes well!

I've had a few trunk rattles (Nov 2007 2.7 Cayman - UK), and manged to cure them after the dealer couldn't after 5 attempts. Noises are usually when going over bumps/rough sections of road.

Problem 1: Rattle/Click/Tick noise from trunk area either right or left around speaker/plastic strut tower.
Solution: Press foam/cloth material into the gap between the top of the plastic strut tower and the underside of the plastic that is above it - the 2 plastic parts can touch and cause the click/tick/rattle. Solved my 1st rattle. I know the dealer should fix it, and it's a design flaw, but I couldn't bear the noise - so the material did the trick.

Problem 2: Rattle/Click/Tick noise from passenger side trunk area (in the UK/rhd cars) sounds like it's coming from the hatch or the plastic around the rear speaker, or even the glass.
Solution: In my car it was the Airbox. I found the rattle was engine load dependant - i.e if you accelerated even slightly the click/rattle increased. I'm sure I've seen another post with something similar. I removed carpet above engine (wedge it up with a pallet knife etc). Remove engine cover (5 Torx screws). From rear of car black plastic Airbox is on far left side. I shook mine and it made the rattle that had eluded the dealer on 5 occasions. Not scientific, but I gave mine a good hard push/pull and the click stopped - haven't had the problem since.
