Wheel nuts/wheel locks rusting

I have an 07 Cayman that I picked up from the dealer 2 1/2 months ago. The car was purchased new as it was a leftover. Every wheel nut/wheel lock is rusting. On all wheels!! Dealer said it's not a warranty item, so I had to complain to the service manger and file a complaint with Porsche North America. They're opening a case complaint. Has anyone else had this problem?

I understand is not unusual in cars exposed to the elements.

you can do a search for in that auction site "Porsche wheel lug bolts" and you will see lug bolt covers and replacement chrome plated lug bolts. Boothe design also sells them, he is a sponsor.

Mine had signs of rust and the dealer replaced them under warranty. I think its because I cought it quick, like within a week. Some how I think they kick started it when they cleaned the cosmoline off in during a detail wash. They did say this was a 1 time deal and wouldnt cover them again, six months later still rust free. If they ever rust again I'll just get the covers.

Totally agree! I think this is a fact of life with the OEM bolts. If you want something with zero rust, you're going to have to go aftermarket. Definitely check out Boothe Designs, his stuff is awesome and inexpensive.

Would spraying the nuts with Rust-Oleum help the situation do you think?
Just got my CS so would love to avoid this.
Thanx

Audi uses plastic caps on their nuts but I think they're 17mm, not the 19mm we have.

I do remember seeing an older post where a member got some shrink fit rubber caps from HomeDepot in black to use.

Any more ideas?

I had an 04 boxster which wound up with rusted bolts after about a year. The dealer did replace them a part of the warantee but, stated the problem could be linked to the type of cleaning chemicals I was using. I currently do not have Rust on my 08 but would not be supeised to find signs of some any day. Onother part to look at are the black screws attaching the plastic cover that runs lengthwise horizontaly along the outside base of the front windshield below the wiper blades. Those also rusted out and the dealer replaced them.

I ordered a set of these from Vivid Racing (sponsor) - they are simply plastic caps that snap over the OEM bolts.

KS-CS: Did you remove the locking lug? From what I understand the plastic caps only fit the non-locking lugs.

My stock ones are rust free and I live just off the ocean with my garage facing it...windows get a salt film in the garage but the lugs are spotless. And I have never put anything on them other than water.

My car didn't come with locking lug bolts, so I don't know for sure whether they would fit or not. If the locking bolt head is hexagonal and the same size as the regular bolts, I would think that they would still fit.
