I programmed the Homelink feature and the following issues bug me, and I wonder how others feel about it:
- need to hold the button for few seconds before an action is taken ( for me takes about 2 to 3 seconds before the door starts to open or close )
- Homelink is not active with the ignition off - this one I just don't understand. It should keep on working with the key in and engine off - it does NOT draw any power ( or very very small amount ) until a key is pressed
This of course brings up the point of the Porsche ignition not having an accessory position as found on many cars - was it always just two positions or is this a recent change ?
Reason it does not work when ignition is off is for security. If you parked your car in the drive, someone could break into itand use HomeLink to gain access to your house. With home automation, you could use it not just for garage door opening, but to disarm security as well.
The issue of pressing for 2-3 sec is an issue with HomeLink, typical of all (in my expeience) cars equipped with it.
My experience with the homelink system has been good. The reaction time may have somethign to do with your door openers, because when I hit the button programmed for my garage door, it begins to open almost instantly, and I can open the door from almost 1/2 a block away... the gate to my community is slower to react - maybe 1-2 seconds.
While the iginition switch doesn't have an 'acc.' spot per se, if you put the key in and turn it to the right once, without turning it all the way to start the car, everything turns on and it's the 'acc.' position.

Austin - I agree it should not work with the key out, but it should with the key in, with the engine switched off. My normal procedure is to get into the car, do my seat belt, put the cell away, open garage door, start engine, drive out, close door. Since the remote for my opener is very small I ended up leaving it in the car ( fits nicely in the open space behind the shifter ). I think I would be a lot more upset about this option if I had to pay for it - as it comes standard it is hard to complain, and as mpollard pointed out correctly by know I should know better with Porsche - accessories are not their strong point
Beez - thanks for the info on the acc. position - maybe I just turn it too hard and have not found it. I know that if I don't press the clutch the car will not start and I get an equivalent effect ( done this before to get the windows to work ) - I will make sure to test it today. As for the opener I have a very new LiftMaster unit - I love watching this thing work - it slows down when closing and opening right at the ends as it uses a DC motor When I use the remote that came with it, it reacts very fast, so I know the issue has to be with the Homelink.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">You all may have read my complaint on my Home Link. With my 350Z I can open the garage door from about 800 (the end of my drive way). By the time I reach the garage, the door is in the fully retracted position and I drive right in without stopping on my extremely slopped driveway. With the Cayman, I have to have the nose of the car within 6ft of the door before the door will react. <o></o>
My homelink works fine. It doesn't take long at all. I just count, 1 alligator, 2 alligator and there you have it ... access to the swamp ...
Regarding an accessory position, Porsche and VW have always had the ability to turn the radio on with the key off. In fact, with the Cayman, that works. And also, after turning the key to off, the radio on button can be pressed (1 aligator) and the radio will stay on ( for 30 minutes).
Besides not liking the cap on the bottle, howz the beer? Me thinks its great!!
Happy Gatoring ....
