Stragest thing this AM: was about to head off to my first auto-X in the Cayman. Sat down, put the key in the ignition, and when I tried to crank the engine, all hell broke loose--loud clicking sound, lights flashing, all system warning lights flashed and signaled failure. At first I thought it was a dead battery, but it really seems more electrical...any ideas?
When is the last time that you drove the car? If it has been a few days, then on entry you are supposed to unlock the door with the key and then press the remote unlock or all kinds of alarm/disable stuff can happen.

Cayman S - a portable amusement park
As others have suggested.......could be a really low battery......or even a battery with a 'dead cell'.......these can cause all sorts of freaky things on a newer car and make it refuse to start.
Yup, you're all right. it was a nearly dead battery. VERY embarrasing, but at least the car is fine after a jump. guess i'd better get one of those battery chargers. oh well, i'll try autocrossing it next month...
Sorry to hear you missed the autox. Did you find out why the battery charge was so low? Were the lights left on or door open? If you aren't sure, you may still have a problem and the jump may only be a temporary fix.

well, i hadn't driven it in over a week..the dealer and the manual say that if you don't drive it for a week the battery will discharge..apparently all those computers run at a low level even if the car is off
Hmm weird...
My CS has sat idle for about 16 days once when I'd been away on business and it fired up first time. Have you got anything plugged into the accessory sockets?
Maybe your battery was bad to begin with. Get the Ctek smart charger (same as the Porsche) for a lot less. around $50.00 It's a MUST if you are not driving it everyday.

Wow! Thanks Fraser for reminding us about issue of not driving the car in a while. It's amazing that the Cayman uses up that much juice just sitting around for one week! I'm definitely going to have to go out and get the battery maintainer when I go on vacation!
