Ok, I just bought a cayman S 06' tip. Im having loud squealing noises come from the rearbrakes after i warm up the car. Its *only* after i warm up the car. When its really bad the noise starts the second i let up on the gas pedal (at anywhere between 15-30 mph). It seems to be much worse in stop/go traffic, but maybe i just notice it more then.
They have champfered the rear pads and the noise still persists. Is this normal? Should i make them replace the pads... i mean the front brakes dont make noise.. so if its normal why do that rear? The noise started as soon as i had the car (i purchased w/ 67 miles on it). currently i have over 3000 miles on it.
Ok, so after rear pad chamfering.. and an additional 4k miles or so there is finally no more noise when im OFF the brakes...
Now there is only noise when im on the brakes... After driving the car for about 30 minutes (sometimes a little less... sometimes a little more) the rear brakes squeall when i use them. Its to the point where i can here them inside the car w/ the windows rolled up going 50 miles an hour.... and the pitch seems to vary.. some times a lower pitch.. some times i high pitched squealing. Has anyone else experience this... is it normal? Please let me know if you car does this... also let me know if your car does NOT do this.. im looking for some feedback before i go see the dealer again., Thanks.
My car does not do this. The brake don't squeal and never have. Perhaps you might get someone from the dealer to drive around with you so they can hear the sound as you make it.
Yeah, the first time i had issues i took them out.. and they couldnt hear the noise.. it was a high pitched squeal. I could hear it, my friends could hear it, but my parents couldnt hear it.. my bet is that you deaf in the high frequencies first. But the few times they did hear a noise they kept saying that it was 'normal' brake noise and the cross drilled rotors make noise... i know thye will be able to hear this.. im just worried that they are going to try to tell me that its normal brake noise. Porsches warranty explicitly excludes brakes noise as being a problem too... but seriously.. sometimes i can even hear it over the radio.. this is getting ridiculous. It's to the point where its almost embarresting to drive.
I have about 3900 miles w/Tiptronic and I just started noticing brake squealing. The difference is on my car, it's the front brakes that are squealing, I notice it at speeds less than 10mph.
This is my first Porsche so I do not know how long the brake pads usually last, but I'm sure that they should not wear out at 4000 miles! I plan on taking mine into the dealer next week.

even with 600+ miles of track driving i wasn't able to wear the factory pads out until about 6000 miles when the fronts were nearly down to the sensors and the rears were at about 50% so yours shouldn't be worn out. I read that the pads do not have squeal indicators like some other cars because of the wear sensors that would trigger your brake light.
Mine squeal on the last 10mph coming to a stop as well and almost always have since the first track day. oem and pagid orange, but pagid is worse.
Mine started out only being able to hear at low speeds.. and now there are occasions where i can hear it going 70 w/ the windows rolled up... but its still loudest in the 20-30 mph range .. IMO. But remember i have had the pads chamfered at 3k miles and then put an addition 4.5k on them.. so mine should be worn in... and in fact they seem to be getting worse... which sucks.
Not yet, but i havnt had time to go back and complain about it, but as far as im concerned its getting worse. I neeed to get that fixed + i have a 'check rear fog light' warning i need looked at...
My brakes squeal only when the pedal is first depressed and only when it's done lightly. Once I apply more pressure the squeal is squelched. I would imagine that if you had something that was constantly rubbing the rotor it would both have a significant wear area and be red hot when you get out of the car (literally glowing). As to high pitched noises, there are a lot of things in the braking system that could cause them, the rear shield , the drilled rotors and the wheels themselves. When I was a kid in high school I bought a set of hub caps from PepBoys for an old car I had. Those things made the worst whistling noise; it was like the bearings were shot-- you couldn't imagine that the hub capswere the issue, but take 'em off -- no noise. (I kept them on because they looked cool and I was 17).
