Frozen Windows

Has anyone noticed that in slightly icy conditions that the windows freeze over which means that if you open your door and then close it the side windows get wedged at an angle - which could easily damage them.

The window motor clicks in and tries to open/close the window slightly when closing the door - but that doesn't work so the motor keeps trying unil it finally gives-up!

The only solution is to pour hot water down the sides and attempt to open/ close the windows repeatedly until they work again.

Has anyone else had the same experience? It's the first time I've noticed it and it was pretty annoying?

Is it just my car that this occurs to?

Personally, I wouldn't pour hot water on anything that is frozen but then again, I don't have a better solution.

VERY BAD idea. Do not put hot water on an icy window.

All german cars do that little window trick.

If I know frost is coming, this might sound silly, and the car is outside, I'll put a beach towel over the windshield. Havent tried the driver side window yet but I might do that next time ... of course, a car cover does the trick

Agreed. I can't remember why, someone told me once why this was not a good idea.

Many ppl find their door locks frozen. many pour hot water on the lock but all that does is the water contacts in the inner metal surfaces and freezes in the lock. bad idea. They sell those antifreeze delocking things to go inside the lock.

Same for windows, if its cold enuff, the water is just going to get inside the window and freeze on contact with cold metal inside the door. bad idea.

Hot water

Depending on the temperature of the glass and the water, you can actually shatter the glass by pouring hot water on it.

A bad idea.

I have an old "windshield" blanket that covers the windscreen with flaps that go under the side windows. I thing they are available for Volvos. Might help!

I have exactly the same problem and have had it 3 mornings this week, live in the frozen north.

I pour warm water on the side windows and after 2 or 3 minutes you can shut the door. I'd be grateful for any ideas / solutions as it's a pain.

Regards

Ian

I thought the car had been tested in "severe" winter conditions - well thats what I read about when the car was first released...

I still pour warm/hot water on the side windows and too have heard that too hot water may shatter a window, however I do recall that in freezing temperatiures the water doesn't stay hot for long...

Pouring water on the windows is something that was practiced a lot in the Winter when I was younger living in Newcastle.

A car cover may be an idea... or some kind of window shield....

Try wiping the rubber seals with silicone spray/furniture polish.

You might try some of this de-icer. I bought this kit but have not had to use it yet. It has been sitting in my car at about 19F and nothing in the kit froze, so I assume it will work. The screenwash is supposed to be good to at least -50F.

Porsche part number 000-044-000-55.

Roy,

Did you get that from the dealership or porsche selection? I checked online and couldn't find it, maybe out of the catalog or something?

I bought it from a dealer for $20. It has a list price of $38, but I kept questioning the parts guy about how to use it (he didn't really know much about it) and he finally offered me a deal on it.

You can find it on Porsche's site under car care.
