Sport Steering Wheel Help

Let me start by saying that there is more relevant information on this forum than can be found at any one Porsche dealer. I have a Cayman S ordered and have made several changes due to information found on the forum. My question is this. I have ordered the natural brown full leather interior with numerous upgrades (leather rear center console, gear lever trim, steering column, door finishers). I also ordered the sport steering wheel (435) and discovered today (on this forum) that it will not be finished in smooth leather. I was going to see if I could still change this to the smooth leather wheel (460), but I discovered the attached image. This smooth leather wheel appears to have a crease in the airbag cover. I'm wondering if anyone who has the smooth leather sport wheel has encountered anything like this? I'm guessing that it might be due to the fact that the leather is a thinner material than the plastic on the 435 wheel. I know this might seem a bit nitpicky, but I'm trying to get this right. Any light that can be shed on this would be appreciated.

My non-smooth leather black sport wheel also shows that crease. (And it is plastic/rubbery. Not leather covered.) Maybe it is designed to split there when the air bags deployed?

More importantly, are you keeping your '88 951s?

I thought that there was probably something going on under the cover to cause the crease. Just seems to be more obvious in the leather example I posted. The '88 951s was one of the silver rose cars (hence silberrosa) and had less than 25K miles. I sold it last year. Had to come back to the fold!

Great cars. I owned seven other cars that came and went during the time period that I owned the turbo. I can only hope that the Cayman wears as well!

I have the 460 wheel and yes I do have the slight creases in the airbag cover which with the 460 is leather, so they do show a bit more than with the regular sport wheel which I believe is vinyl. No big deal, even $140k 911 turbo wheels are like this.

Something to think about......I have seen several "natural" leather cars with all sorts of steering wheels. One thing I have noticed is that a sport wheel (435) in natural leather looks about the same as a smooth version (460) in "normal" leather. The natural leather by the way it is processed seems to have a finer texture to begin with, so the difference between the "normal" and "smooth" versions of steering wheels is very slight,....in fact hard to notice really. This is not the case with the "base" leathers.....the normal sport wheel vs. the smooth wheel is very noticeable. You might want to save some $$$ and just get the 435 wheel.

Thanks Croc,

As it turns out, I called my dealer and made the change to the 460 wheel this morning. I think I'll be happy with it because even though I agree with you based on photos I've seen that the leather difference is not noticable, the airbag cover is still going to be a vinyl material with the 435 wheel.
