Hi. I think that 20 years from now, when Caymans are featured in classic car events, those with the rear wiper will be considered novel, maybe even desirable for their rarity. But I think that unless you'll be driving in very heavy rain a lot, it probably isn't worth it now. Just drive real fast and hit the defrost switch.

I dont like the look of it as well, but very useful to me so far.
Especially on days when the rain comes down really fine and not big fat drops. With the angle of rear hatch, it collects droplets in no time at all and can be a real pig to see through if i dont have a rear wiper.
The first week I had my car, it rained torrentially several days, and I got by fine without one. I think at low speeds, say 35 or less, water might pool up and hamper visibility, but anything above that and it starts sheeting off, a coat of Rain-X would probably make it even better. On the other hand, my MINI with its near vertical rear window really needs its rear wiper.
Besides being very useful for those many rainy days and nights in Seattle, I think the wiper looks good- sort of businesslike and dressy, like the luggage rack my wife has on her Mini Cooper.
One of the other reasons I did not get it is that you cannot get two set of golf clubs in with the rear wiper. Also I never had one on my 911 and never really missed it.

I got one on my car because the 996 twin turbo I had before it had one as standard equipment. I probably never use it while actually driving in the rain. It's most useful in situations like SurfCity describes above - dark lots of water on the glass - or early mornings on track or autocross days where I've had to park the car outside and there's a heavy layer of dew on the glass. That's where the rear wiper shines. I also like the look... they've changed the form of it from the turbo I had - the arm and blade is much more low-profile. I guess it's one of those things you either like it not, but I've found it to be very useful on the several long-distance trips I took this year.
