New owner first impressions

Hi all,

I picked up my pre-owned CS (10k miles on odo) last week. Before I share my first impressions, here are the specs:

2006 Caymans S
manual trans
Basalt Black w/Dark Gray full leather interior
19" Carrera S wheels w/colored caps
Heated seats, TPMS, auto climate, illuminated door sills, cargo cover

Bear in mind that I'm comparing this to my two most recent cars, BMW 530 w/sport package, and a fully loaded Z4 3.0. I've also driven (but not owned) Boxsters and 911s. The Cayman reminds me of the last 996 that I drove.

Pros:
- Great handling and steering feedback. Outstanding.
- Flexible engine, very good shifting in spite of the remote trans
- Very good ride considering that I'm driving in New York City on 19" wheels
- Excellent brake feel. The best I've ever experienced.
- Nicely finished interior

Cons:
- Slightly grabby clutch, but I'm used to it now. I've driven sticks for years but I stalled the CS a lot in the first day or two. I understand performance plates so this probably isn't a negative.
- Annoying rattles from the rear, sounds like trim rubbing
- TPMS is not accurate
- Fuel economy seems rather low even when driven gently
- Audio is rubbish
- Why won't the center console lid stay up by itself when opened?

I have to cut this short, work just got busy. I love this car!

Craig

Quirks

TPMS is off by a pound or so and should just be used as an indication of impending doom. I check my pressures weekly with an accurate guage.

My fuel mileage figured by the on-board computer is consistently 1.5 to 1.8 mpg lower than what I get if I use a calcultor. My 2.7 gets 18-20 around town and 28 or so on the freeway. I know I could squeeze 30 mpg out of it if I could keep my foot out of it, but that's impossible. Your mileage will improve a bit as the car gets broken in.

Enjoy your new ride!

Congrads!!
I can't believe that the previous owner drove 10k without getting the rattle fixed. (btw. easy to remedy at the dealer)
Could you please take a pic of the illuminated door sill.
I've never seen that on a Cayman.

Gas mileage is a product of how you drive, where you drive, and the octane that you use - not to mention the condition of the vehicle.

At 10,000+ miles, the car is broken in - so, unless your driving habits are bad or you are in stop-n-go traffic, you may have to live with the mileage that you have.

I have a 3.2L CS with similar mileage. I have had it since new and have controlled its life. I generally get 17MPG unless I'm on the freeway without traffic, then I get into the low to mid twenties. That's it.

I run 91 RON Shell or Chevron. When I have added 100 octane, it did improve, but only slightly.

I generally keep the tach between 3000-4000 rpm when cruising - rarely do I go below 3000. Those that do probably get better mileage. I just can't force myself to do that ...

Enjoy your car ...

annoying noises

Grats on the new car- I just solved my rattle from the rear this afternoon. Turned out to be one of the two plastic trim pieces at the very rear below the hatch door that is held by the plastic turn screw. Added felt below the edge to tighten the fit. Now I just have the clunk but I adjusted the rear hatch rubbers and it only clunks on a very sharp jolt.

Yeh radio is dissapointing- fortunately there is "The Sixth Symphony in P minor" inducted by Ferry Porsche. Hope you get your rattle sorted.

I'll post a nice picture of the illuminated door sills as soon as I can. I'll describe it now though. It's sort of a blueish white glow, like xenons. It's made of translucent plastic. It's the same script as the trunk logo, and says "Cayman S." It's about 11 or 12 inches in length, by about 2" high. It's mounted in what looks like a gray stainless steel, a bit darker than the steel that you'd see used in a sink. The steel surround runs almost the entire length of the sill.

It's pretty cool but personally I wouldn't spend the $780 for it if I was spec'ing the car new.
