speakers

I just took apart the door on my 2007 Boxster and I would like to upgrade the speakers. The car came with the base system: which consists of a 6.5" driver in each door and one tweeter in each corner of the dash for a total of four speakers.

Although the cutout in the door could probably hold a larger speaker, a 6.5" is a drop in replacement. The door panel has a location to mount a standard 3.5" speaker or a tweeter could easily be fit into this space.

I want to select speakers that will work best with a AVIC-D3 without using any external amplifiers. I plan on running two small 3.5" or 4" speakers in the rear storage console. Just not sure what to do about the fronts. A good 6.5" coaxial would probably be the easiest solution, but components would work as well. I just don't want to end of with speakers that will require an external amp to get decent sound.

Any suggestions on brands?

Steve

I was told that the base sound system speakers were:

• Dashboard:
2x 19-mm/ 0.7 in. tweeters
1x 70-mm/ 2.8 in. mid-range loud-speaker
• Door:
2x 100-mm/ 3.9 in. mid-range loud-speakers
2x 200-mm/ 7.9 in. low-range loud-speakers
• Rear side:
2x 100-mm/ 3.9 in. mid-range loud-speakers

Is this the same on the Boxster as the Cayman, or different? Or are my numbers wrong?

You listed the speakers for the Sound Package Plus Option and they are absolutely correct and the same as the Sound Package Plus Option on the Boxster with the possible exception of the rear speakers. The Boxster rear speakers are housed in a different location, so the size may be slightly different.

There is a 2007 Cayman (not an "S") version with only the 4 speakers that I mentioned. The 6.5" door speaker is mounted in a large mounting bracket in the location of the 200mm speaker from the Sound Package Plus and there is no mid-range driver although the location is there. I guess what I am trying to say here is you should be able to get this mounting bracket from Porsche and a 6.5" drops right in. I could also easily make a bracket for the mid-range door location and mount a tweeter in it. I am just wondering if mouniting components is worthwhile if I am not going to use an external amplifier to drive them.

I will take some pictures of the inside of the door panel when I get a chance, it is the same on both the Cayman and the Boxster.

Morel Elate are my favorite, they sound great! DLS, Sea Lotus are some of my other favorite, but the Elate by far is the best sounding speakers I own so far

Match it up to a Mcintosh amp and you are golden! I am selling my extra Mcintosh amps if you are interest BTW

Never did install any speakers. It just seemed like a waste of time unless I put in a new head unit and I haven't done that yet either. I do have some pictures of the door panel if that helps.

2007 Porsche Boxster Speakers

I wanted to do a three way system using dynaudio components. Woofer and mid in the door and tweeter in the dash.

I can confirm, there are just 4 speaker connections up front. I replaced my CDR24 today with a Pioneer AVIC-HD3 (Z2) and although there was a noticeable improvement in the sound, I'm already thinking about some kind of speaker upgrade.

Fortunately it's a non-Bose car so things should not be too complicated

I also have Morel separates in my Cayman. Spectacular sound, although you'll need an amp to power them.

EDIT: I do not have the Elates, I have 6" Hybrid Ovations.

Thank you for the door pictures. The door is fairly well sealed but you can't tell from the pictures how solid the sheet metal is. Dynamatting the door might help some - if anyone has tried please let us know. It does look like the stock speaker mount could be improved considerably and hold a larger speaker. An MDF ring in place of the plastic mount might help. Some egg crate or accoustic pad on the door sheet metal behind the speaker to break up the back wave might also help the mid bass. The mounting for the mid-range is bad, mounted open air to the door panel, I would like to see a picture of the mid range speaker. If I did a speaker replacement I would look at a pair of two way components and try mounting the tweeter where the mid-range goes. Most experts in car audio will laugh at mounting the tweeters in the dash - reflecting the sound off the windshield is not optimal for sound quality.

Advantyper,
  • Do you have the sound plus pkg with 9 speakers?
  • If yes, did you replace all the speakers with Morels?
  • Did you keep the factory head unit?
  • Did you keep the factory Amp?
  • And added a Mcintosh ?
Thanks for your help.

I can comment on this. I have the Morels as well. Sound package plus. I disconnected all the speakers in the dash, and left the rear speakers connected for fill. I have a Boston Acoustic amp in the front boot and a custom enclosure in the rear for a 8" JBL sub. The enclosure is tucked in teh corner and doesn't even cover up the cargo tie down hooks. i'll take some pics tomorrow and post.

dreis44, assuming you have maintained the factory head unit, from which head unit connections did you pick up the amp input? Was it a line level input or speaker level input to the amplifier? Did you have to add splices to the speaker wiring to extend them into the front boot?
Thanks.

Thanks.
I did keep the factory PCM unit. I did not however do the install myself, so am unsure on where to splice in. I used a local audio shop that works on high end cars.
