I've read MANY a write up now about how tiny the center console buttons are. I don't disagree.
That said, I'm an analytical type and prefer to see the 'data' that supports the supposition. Appearing small, and actually being too small to function properly are separate issues. My cell phone has small buttons too, but I somehow manage to never mis-dial a number. I wonder why that is? Maybe the buttons aren't too small after all?.....
So, here's where the real question comes in, and its the ONLY question that really matters on the buttons and their functionality:
1) How many times have you hit the wrong button? How many times have you hit the buttons total?
I have not used them much at all since the engine sounds are so great, however on a less demanding drive today I had no problem finding the stations that I wanted or the CD's that I preferred. User adapts?
The problem, as with I-drive, is that you have to spend too much of your attention to perform a simple function rapidly. Anything that detracts from attention to driving needlessly is a fault, IMHO. Besides the whole set up is needlessly fussy and is simply a design snafu by Harman/Becker, the maker of the unit. Would it kill Mercedes or Porsche to buy a non-EU stereo or NAV system? Apprently so.
So far I have not found the buttons to be too small. I am able to locate radio/cd easily. Of course I don't use the radio in the Cayman as much as I do in any other car.
The number of buttons on that thing is the primary reason I chose not to get the PCM/NAV. The cellphone comparison is invalid in my opinion, since you're not DRIVING while looking for the tiny buttons (After all, who would dial a cellphone while driving? That would be irresponsible.).
Porsche has generally followed the design principle that form follows function. The little buttons is because of the little need to ever use them. The radio is a distraction and should be used when not really driving - kind of like cell phones.
And if I had a dime for everytime I saw someone dialing a cell phone while they were driving, I would have a CGT.
The only bottuns I use for tunes, when so inclined, are the two knobs. They handle the one cd just fine, until I turn it off to hear the powerplant ...

Come on guys....ride yourgator the way it's going. Quit screwing with the goofy stereos these cars come with.Porsche's are not known for their Hi-Fidelity....just their performance. Get an Ipod, program it with all your favorite tunes, and set in in your ash tray. No more buttons...zipo. You don't have to look at it to jump a song.
A way around dealing with the buttons, to some extent, is the multifunction steering wheel and the display of that information on the center instrument. The selection drums work great on that steering wheel. The downside to that steering wheel is its to thin compared to the others, but there still is no multi-function option for the sport steering wheel.
I'm only 27 so that may be why I have ZERO problems with any of the buttons. I don't think they're too small, nor do I have problems locating them quickly and pressing them.
WhenI have a passenger who starts selecting tracks from the PCM's MP3/Multi-CD player I can't use the gear stick because the controls on the PCM are too close to it! I usually end-up compensating by slowing down without changing gear - which as you may know is annoying when travelling at speed... It kills that driving pleasure...
I find the buttons to be just fine - they're much[/quote] bigger than on any previous Porsche I've owned, and I don't seem to have any trouble using them. I've yet to hit the wrong button, and I use the stereo quite a bit on the trips back to N. Calif. to compete in PCA events in my old region.
