Cayman - the car that makes gas

So this weekend we (my wife and I) decided to go to the Jersey shore to visit our friends. With traffic it is usually about a two hour and twenty minute drive. I looked at the gas gauge and mileage left in the tank...260....plenty of fuel for the ride.

I found if quite funny that we were about 12 miles outside of Altantic City and I looked down at the mileage left in the tank...the reading was exactly 300 miles. The car made an extra 40 miles all while driving at a higher speed then normal and we were about 70 miles into the trip so far.

So this new cold-fusion engine is pretty sweet in my book.

I've had the same experience with miles remaining. With the much warmer weather here in Virginia, my MPG has taken an increase to between 23-25 MPG in daily driving. Also noticed that MPG seems to be better overall if you keep the revs around 3000. Has anyone noticed this?

I have had this same experience in every single car I have owned with computer calculated MPG. It is just a system based on averages. Pull over and drag race the car about 20-30 times from 0-60. In the miles it takes to do that, trust me that the computer will let you know you do not have 300 miles left on the tank.

My car does the same. Here is what I suspect is the reason. When you first begin to drive on secondary streets before you get on the highway your mpg is lower. As your mpg increases on the highway (assuming little traffic and a fairly steady speed) the computer uses the higher mpg with the remaining fuel to compute the distance you can travel with that fuel.

Here's an example:
you start your trip with 15gal of gas. Your mpg before you're on the highway is 18 mpg or 270miles you can travel. Once you're on the highway and you are doing 25mpg even if you now have 14 gal your car says that the range you have left is 350miles. You continue to your destination and now have 12gal of gas and you still averaged 25mpg. Your car tells you that you can travel another 300miles.
15x18=270 14x25=350 12x25=300

I’ll do anything for money except work. You have to draw the line somewhere.
