Getting started with a new receiver head unit.

Hi All,
This is my first post on this site. I started poking around trying to see if I could upgrade the head audio unit on my 2007 Boxster. The current unit is the SPP. I found this forum by a phone call to a dealer, email to a guy who did it who sent me to the site. The site seems just great- a welcoming group and a wealth of information. I almost have the guts to start this project, but I’m not there yet. I’ve tried to read as much as possible on the site, but much of the stuff seems a little advanced. So, if you can tolerate a few basic questions, help me visualize this and I’ll give it a go!
1. It seems like the eBay Japanese dash kit is the way to go.
2. The excellent article from K-Man S (Aug ’05) shows how to get the head unit out. The wires in the photo of the back end in plugs. What can I expect for connections? Does the Japanese kit fit the plugs and jacks or am I going to end up cutting and splicing these wires? Some posts mention specific (AVIC D-3) wiring . How do I figure that out? Some mention a can bus adapter- do I need something like that?
3. I’m looking at the Kenwood DDX-512, if that matters. All I really want is better sound, iPod, and Bluetooth. I can forgo the DVD and even the nav.
Thanks for any help. I’d really like to give this a shot.
Mike
