How do I mount my radardetector on the dash without wrecking the finish with glue etc?

I suppose you could use something like 2-sided tape or Velcro - though you would have to clean off the adhesive w/ some solvent later.
I think most people are using windshield or visor mounts (you can also use a visor mount on the leading edge of the headliner) and then running the power cord along the front gap in the headliner and down the A-pillar (pretty easy to conceal there).

I transfer my detector between a couple of cars so I use the windshield mount. I also find that I get a more advanced warning with my detector being higher up then the dash. YMMV, but I would recommend KC-CS' suggestion for mounting.

I mounted mine on the left side of the instrument cluster with a small aluminum plate that slips down in the space between the A pillar and the dash and hard wired it to the fuse panel (empty slot). I used double-sided velcro to mount the detector to the plate. Photos attached. It can be removed easily for use in another car if you have a second connector. I ordered the wire from Escort for this and had a knowledgeable friend help with the wiring. The wire can be slipped between the dash and pillar with little effort, but you have to take the fuse panel (a few screws) away from the footwell panel to get behind it.

Pretty slick idea - where did you get the aluminum plate - is that something you fabricated yourself?
Again, a friend of mine who is skilled at such things made it for me from a piece of aluminum and then we painted it flat black. It was pretty simple since the base is about the shape of the Escort base, shorter, but wider. Here is a sketch with the dimensions. Note the little notch on the side that slips in to the gap to allow for a screw in the panel.

Pretty nice set up, but does this mounting point interfere with picking up signals from the rear? I was thinking of doing a mount similar to this but thought the detector wouldn't be very effective getting radar signals from behind me.
