Is it possible to replace CDR 24 with a unit that play MP3...
CDs? I have the Bose system and would like to replace it with a stock unit that plays M3 CDs. I can't believe the incredible car with a Bose stereo does not play MP3s

The easiest way to do this is to pickup and install a used PCM. You can find them on ebay from $800 and up. That won't give you nav, but you can always add that after as well. I bought my car with a CDR24 and have now upgraded it (myself) to PCM+Nav.

It may even be cheaper to install an aftermarket head unit and amp, without upgrading the speakers. It will not get you to stock look, but a good installer can make it look real nice.
I don't think it fits what you are looking for, but just wanted to present an alternative to you.

Just saw this post. Thanks, good info.

Upgrading from cdr24 to PCM will take you 2-3 hours if you haven't pulled that part of the car apart. Now it takes me about an hour total. The prices range widely on the PCMs. In the thread I linked to, you can see my upgrade path.

Just be careful that you get the correct version of PCM for your car. The earlier PCM units did not support MP3 playback , so you would need to add a dension unit to get MP3 functionality from a USB or i pod. The early units do not have a Cd drive that will play MP3 Cd's. 997.642.141.xx Is a PCM unit for a non Bose amplified vehicle, 997.642.143.xx is a PCM unit for a vehicle with Bose amp. The earlier 997.642.103.xx and 101.xx units do not support MP3 playback. For your current situation a mobridge or dension unit will be the cheapest and simplest way to play MP3 files on your sound system controlled from the existing head unit.
