Just saw this post where the app uses the accelerometer in the iPhone to extrapolate performance numbers for the car. I'm sure it isn't nearly that accurate, but it looks like a blast. I'm going to give it a try this weekend and report back.
Not cause I advocate speeding, but because this is a nice toy to add to my ipod fun in the car. For 13 dollars I can have fun for an hour. Its like going to a movie.
Then compare to my friends' cars.

It uses the accelerometer for lots of different things within the phone.
when taking a picture, irregardless of which way you hold the phone, it knows which way is up so your pictures always come out "right side up".
When viewing webpages you can turn the phone so that you you get a wider view of the page you are looking at.
When using the iPod feature you can turn the phone on the side to get the "coverflow" view which shows all your different album covers that you can then flick through with your finger.
the simple calculator turns into a scientific one when you turn the phone on the side.
And much more. The new third party apps have really made some excellent use of the accelerometers in the iPhone. One of the less serious ones I love is the iPint app where your iPhone seems to fill with beer and you can pretend to drink it and the beer drains away. It really is cool.
i get how it measures G force, but how does it measure MPH etc
as accelerometer measures instaneous acceleration (Ie movement in relation to itslef)
as far as I know it doesnt measure distance....

velocity = previous velocity + acceleration * time
The iPhone can measure the time and acceleration and compute the velocity. The question is how accurate is the acceleration measurement, we can assume the time is fairly accurate.
There are some actual test reviews on dragtimes. Times are conservative when compared to a Gtec but maybe laden weight and drivetrain losses could have been bad estimates.
I have installed the Dynolicious program on my iPhone, but every time I try to run the Calibration, it just seems to freeze up. Anyone else having this issue?
I'm planning on seeing what the skid pad mode records at the track this week-end.

These apps look great!! How is everyone mounting their iPhone for this type of use? I can image it would not be good to just leave it in the center console because it will be jostled around quite a bit, possibly affecting the readings. Suction cup mount? Wrap it in a small towel and put in center console?

I tested it a little bit today. The skid pad part is interesting, but I'm not sure what good the information is. Plus, it changes when you pick the device up.
I tried the other part too, but set it up wrong and only had one chance to try it. I'll do more tomorrow.
I have a rubberized shell on mine that holds it steady on almost any surface. It didn't move at all in my tests.

Not available for the iPhone until September, but I've been impressed with the quality of the Ram Mounts - I plan on getting the flexible gooseneck version myself (can also use for Nav/Bluetooth/iPod functions).

Thanks smounic. I saw a friend's rubberized shell on his iPhone today, it looks like it is pretty grippy (sort of like oxo goodgrips stuff) and would keep the phone planted fairly well.
KS-CS, thanks for the heads up on the upcoming Ram Mount. I'll have to watch for it in September.
This looks like a great little app, I'm going to try it out.
