Add extra speakers at the back of the car

Hi everybody.

Just a quick question, I have the basic speaker system on my cayman S but with PCM and I was wondering if I can use the rear speaker holes to fit extra speakers. Does anybody know if it's prewired and if the PCM unit can cope with 2 more speakers? Or is it a different hardware altogether?

Many thanks!

Jerome

Be carefull because the bose speakers (assuming you have them) are 4 ohm speakers. Almost every speaker on the market are 8 ohm speakers. What that means is that your amplifier will have an impedance mismatch (read: not good). You cant simply "add" speakers as you are implying (or I perceive). If by "add" you mean retain existing speakers and add more, then I wouldn't recommend using the existing setup (without additional amps wired up correctly). If by "add" you mean "replace," there are a few 4 ohm replacement speakers out there, gut I haven't tried any. I'm sure you could by a 4 ohm to 8ohm converter, but the added noise in the system plus the lossless phase transfer wouldn't probably sound good (slight echo).

I'm sure others on this board know about what you can do to make your CS sound better and I'm sure others have put different speakers in it. I have another car (CTS-V) that has a bose setup and it sounds awesome!! It has a factory-installed subwoofer and everything. It takes up the whole back lid. This CS just sounds bad Sorry. There is a bass mod out there which you can find and it will sound a little better.

If you read the posts on this site, many folks try to upgrade what they can hear, not hearing what they play. Good luck.

I believe he said in his post he had the basic system; that's the front only 6 speaker system, non Bose and non sound package plus amplified. Also the Bose speakers are 2 ohm and car speakers are normally 4 ohm.

As far as if the rears are pre-wired, I'm not sure. I was discussing this with another user, but the only way to check would probably be to look at the back of the head-unit at the speaker plug and see if the wires are present on the plug. If you search one of the AVIC install threads, you can see what pins are the rear speaker cables. The headunit can run the rear speakers on its own, so it shouldn't be difficult to add rear speakers if you run the wires from the speakers to the plug.

Good luck.

Many thanks for your replies, I'll remove the rear covers to see if there is cables and look at the head unit as well.

Cheers

Suneet,

You are correct.

usual home speaker: 8 ohm
usual car speaker: 4 ohm
Bose car speaker: 2 ohm

Sorry for the confusion. I *knew* that they were half of the "normal" market speakers out there.

Now...if you can get text on my PCM from my iPhone ipod (latest post) then I I'd be very happy lol.. I actually did make a contribution as well.
