Capristo Science

Okay here are the dyno runs before and after the capristo install this week. This is on a stock CS without other perfonmance mods.

The stock and the capristo (open valves) were run three times each in 3rd gear. Is there a difference? Yes... about 20hp on average mainly at the top end, but there was a consistent difference in the mid-range area as well. Hearing protection is certainly required. You feel it in your gut around 90 mph, and by 124... ah... it's like loud eh?

Test for valves open vs valves closed was run in 4th.

There was no appreciable difference between valves open and valves closed on the dyno runs.

The 1st attachment has the 3 stock runs.

The 2nd attachment shows the three Capristo runs (valve open) and an overlap of valve open and valve closed runs (runs 7 and 8...the 4th gear lines that run to higher speeds).

Attachment 3 shows an overlay of a stock and a Capristo run.

Some of us seem to have CS's that run around 4-5 hp higher than the rest. That was seen on a dyno day a while back and mine also seems to have started out at about 300 as opposed to 295, even given a correction fudge. Everything is relative though.

Oh, while the stock and the Capristo runs were done on different days, the correction only differs by half a percent.

Very cool. Thanks for doing this. It's great to see what it would do on an otherwise stock car.

Now that a couple of weeks have passed how are you feeling about the exhaust? No noise violation petitions from the neighbors in West U. I presume. Did you add and dyno the other planned mods?

This whole exhaust thing makes my head hurt. Are we talking about cat-back? Ripping out the cats so the car is no longer smog legal and throws CELs? What is the story. I am looking for an intake/ECU/exhaust pasckage that will NOT THROW CELs, and give me HP gains.

Calm down.

There are only 2 ways to prevent CELS

1) You only replace the exhaust behind the factory manifolds with the first set of cats. This is typically called a "Catback" system. Swapping these out will not create CEL problems because the original factory manifolds and first cats are still in place.

2) If you install headers with aftermarket cats or no cats in place of the factory manifolds and factory 1st cats then you WILL get CELS, in this case the only way to prevent them is to use software tuning such as Snap-Flash that will change your O2 sensor readings to not trip CELs.

Does that explain it better?

???

I am now confused... In the first attachment, your stock CS produced around 260HP shouldn't it be 295ish??? I thought the stock CS produced 295 HP and not 260HP

So many questions, so little time...

HP depends on where you measure it. A CS is someplace around 295 to 300 at the flywheel. Inefficiency of the drive train decreases the HP applied to the road to 255 to 260. Dynos measure at the wheel. You may notice another dyno that was put up today that showed 255 uncorrected and 261 corrected... and this was after a tuning mod and (I believe a Miltek and de-snork). That translates to a bit over 300 at the flywheel (unless we remove the engine to test it, we are stuck with calculating back from the wheels). Mine, after Capristo alone is a bit less than 320, or 276 at the wheels.

CEL's? Yes, I had them when I first had the system put on. I do not have them now afer SnapFlash.

Do I feel a difference? I can't say that I do. Is it there? sure it is.

After two weeks and only 250 miles ( hey, I had to give a speach in Jackson Hole)... ahhh I think it is broken. There's no difference between open and closed soundwise like there was when first installed. It is pretty loud all the time so I'm going to have to look for a leak.

Would I do it again? To be honest, no I probably wouldn't. For me, actually my wife, the loud setting is too loud. I heard it from a distance as the installers started it and drove it to the dyno, and that was pretty impressive... totally different than what you hear from inside... deep with a nice burble.

SF... No West U. complaints but the neighbors here certainly know when I come and go. Serves them right though for keeping the alley muddy!

CS spec is 295HP of which is the engine power at the crank. There is loss through the drive train to the wheels. Dyno measurements are done at the wheels. We all use an average of 15% loss generally. Which equates to 250HP give or take some variation.

You also have some rolling loss, you can check that out by seeing how easy it is to push a CS in netural. Just dont let anybody see you do it in case they get the wrong idea!

GeoMedic,

It is pretty simple to test the Capristo system, simply start the car and get out with your keyfob that comes with the system, your valves should be closed. Press the A button, your valves shoudl open, if you look under the car you can see this and you can also hear it as the idle tone changes. (watch my youtube video). PRess the B button, the valves should close. If the valves aren't closing it means you don't have vacuum going to the black Capristo control box. Check your vacuum line going to the box, pull it off and put your finger on it, is there vacuum? If not, did it come disconnected at the engine? If there is, then put it back on the black box and check the other two lines as you press the A and B buttons, do the outgoing hoses change in vacuum? If so, then the valves would be bad, if not then the black box would be bad.

I suspect the simplest solution, that you aren't getting vacuum for some reason because vacuum is required to close the va
