Short Shifter...Porsche

Hello...just noticed in the new edition of Christophoros Mag. (my favourite watch Mag) that Porsche are selling a short shifter for the sports cars except the GT3s. My question is why don't they come from the factory with a short shifter??? can't imagine anyone wanting a long shifter. Secondly anyone know how to identify a short shifter in the car?

I test drove 2 CS's one with and one without a short shifter. Liked the short shifter much better. Yes it feels somewhat mechanical and not as smooth as a longer throw, but you have very definitive shifts, and a much shorter stick movement.

I am told that dealers can NOT order them for inventory and can only get them as customer ordered options going forward. I guess there as many folks that do not like them as do.

PCA members can go to the latest (Oct '07) Panorama magazine and read Joel Reiser's negative but informative view on short shifters. Take away "When they talk about doing more precise shifts, they mean you, not the shifter." And "What a short shifter does is trade away leverage to shorten the motion of your hand. This makes sense if your hand's slow speed is the problem". A good read for PCA members to consider.

Gald someone else caught this little article as well - I haven't had time to make a post about it. Reisser makes some really interesting comments about the nature of different transmissions and their interaction with the shifter.

Personally I have a 2.7 liter Cayman and installed a Porsche short shifter earlier this year. I had it in the car for about a month and had to remove it. In my opinion the short shifter is certainly not for everyone and based on my experience the short shifter is not a good match for the 5 speed gearbox.

I'm also not a fan of short shifters in most cars. I wouldn't put it in my CS and I am sure I would not be any better at shifting with one.
