Man, i wish you luck. I found some instructions on the internet but couldn't get the airbag off to save my life

If you do manage to remove the airbag I bet you get the dreaded warning light only the dealer can reset

I gave up and the dealer charged me 1 hour labor for the swap.

Do you have the sport (round airbag) or regular wheel? I have the sport but just got a replacement GT3 (alcantara) wheel from suncoast. I took a look on the site and plan on using the instructions posted by josephsdesimone in this thread:

Removal of sports steering wheel

I'm going to give it a try later today or tomorrow. I'll try to take some pics and might even write a short article if it all works out. Given my mechanical aptitude (or lack thereof), that's a big "if"... I barely managed a de-snork.

I haven't taken a Porsche airbag out, but in my VW I needed to turn the wheel and insert a pick into a hole in the back and pry to release a catch spring.

WARNING: Do not attempt this with the battery connected. Disconnect it before beginning. If you disconnect the airbag while the battery is connected, you will trip an 'Airbag Failure' error and will need to visit the dealer to have them clear it.

There is a hole in the bottom of the wheel. I too have the GT3 wheel, but am waiting for the correct airbag to arrive from Suncoast. Once I get the correct bag, I will assemble and disassemble it on the new one before I remove the one currently in place. A practice run so to speak.

It was also a similar procedure in my old M5. And yes, you need to disconnect the battery.

Right according to various posts, the procedure (at least with the sport wheel) seems to be:

1. Disconnect battery
2. Remove gray plastic trim around airbag
3. Insert small flat blade screwdriver into hole in the back of the lower spoke of the wheel, push and the airbag will pop out
4. Disconnect airbag wiring
5. Wheel will come off with torx 55 on extended socket wrench

Reverse instructions to install new wheel. I'll give it a try and will post my results.

The new wheel comes without the trim - you have to transfer the original piece. I think it just pops off but will verify.

Correct. I think the trim comes attached with the air bag.. You can even pick between leather and leatherette-covered air-bag. That's why I was surprised about removing it.

i replaced the sport wheel myself with the gt3 rs wheel. hoya's instructions are perfect. the gray piece around the air bag is just pulled off with a lot pressure. pull from right next to the spokes. realize there is a metal bar that runs in the hole at the bottom of the wheel. you need to push on this metal bar, not just blindly pushing in the hole. i have pictures i will try to post.
