PSE mod

I tried searching, but i can't find anything... There's a way to get rid of the speedometer control of PSE, like 996 and 986? Like disconnecting a wire or something, not the switch mod..

Yes there is.

I know because I have done it on mine.

You will need to remove the engine covers to gain access -- both top and front. Then locate the electric/vacuum switch. It's toward the back of the car a little on the driver's side. (Use the search function on Rennlist and Rennteam to find the details and pictures for the 997 -- the basics are the same)

Then cut one of the wires (either will do) and splice in a switch. That way you can interrupt the power that opens the valves which makes it operate in loud mode or, by closing the switch, let it revert back to factory operation.

I used a SPST switch that mounts in the ashtray. I ran the wires along the shifter cables using spiral wrap to keep things neat and you can poke them through the cable grommet and thence into the console and ashtray (you would need to drill a hole in the ashtray).

I hope that helps.

All the best,

- Mark

I'm a little confused, i think. What is the speedometer control of PSE? I was under the impression that PSE on/off simply opens/closes vavles (connected to electric motors). I didnt know there were vaccum lines too... could you explain what adding this switch and disabling speedo control actually does? thanks a lot!!

From our FAQ's "In the 996, 997 and Boxster models equipped with PSE, the system automatically switches to quiet mode between 25-40 MPH to comply with certain noise emission requirements. Owners of those vehicles have found various ways to circumvent the 'quiet window'". Presume this is still correct.

I went to my local Porsche Centre and asked them to make the exhaust permanently loud; 15 minutes work later and the plug within the engine compartment was disconnected and secured - and now my exhaust is no longer selectable but always LOUD!

Is there a pretty big difference in sound at higher speed? say 60-75mph?

I don't want the switch inside, i like a mod like 996/986 that disable speedometer signal, and leave it open all time when in sport mode maybe there's a wire that give speedometer signal to PSE? if so, I can cut it

Meti,

In reply to your post:

" don't want the switch inside, i like a mod like 996/986 that disable speedometer signal, and leave it open all time when in sport mode maybe there's a wire that give speedometer signal to PSE? if so, I can cut it "

To my knowledge, there is no such wire. The signal that controls the electric/vacuum switch comes from the DME output. The inputs to the DME are many, speed and selection of the Sport Chrono (or Sport) mode are only two of many.

So do directly answer your question, I do not think there is a way to do that.

You can, however, use a 12V source and a third wire (for power) to a DPDT switch and make the valves stay closed as well as stay open in whatever mode you choose. That gets you more than you say you really want but still requires a switch.

I am not sure if by "Sport" you mean Sport Chrono or the Sport setting on the PASM. If it's the S/C, why would you want the exhaust loud only on that setting? It's a real PIA around town. At least to me, it's too touchy on the throttle response for everyday driving. But I love the sound of the PSE.

I can have it both ways. Anytime. The only function I can't do is make it quiet in S/C mode -- that's what the DPDT switch (with power) does for you.

Does that help?

To Chare:

"Is there a pretty big difference in sound at higher speed? say 60-75mph?"

Yes, there is some. Top down -- oops! you Cayman folks can't do that! -- it's pleasantly noticeable. Top up, it's very noticeable. It isn't obnoxious, but it's definitely there. Quiet mode is better for highway cruising with the top up.

All the best,

- Mark

I think the other way to achieve always on is to disconnect the cables that go to the valves on the back of the exhaust. The exhaust is always open (hence the nice start up noise :-) ) so disconnecting the valves at the back will leave it always loud. Maybe tap the cable connectors up to keep them clean. There was a useful thread a while back that described the three methods.
