These 'hp tuning kits' with unspecified descriptions of the compromises made remind me of an old west snake oil salesman. I'm sure there are gains available but it seems prudent to understand where the gains come from. The modern ECU is finely tuned to work with a number of different inputs. Short changing mileage, emissions or engine life might give more hp if one wants to pay the price. But to me it is all about understanding the modification before beliving the claim. Even a before and after dyno test doesn't tell the full story.

Precisely why I will wait for Ian Kugh to write of review ofCaymans with some of these modifications to determine if they have improved the job that Walter Rohrl and the Porsche engineersdid at the Nurburgring before thinking about installing any modifications.

I fully agree. As someone who has no intention of staying stock, I'm looking around for ECU tuners. A mapping that runs outside factory spec is trouble waiting to happen. I fully believe there are some 'free' gains to be had since the manufacturer will typically ship in the middle of the spec range, and it should be safe to move a little closer to the top of the spec (it's still in spec, after all...). A 10% increase isn't all that unbelievable...

I have not hadSpeed Art after market but did have an Andial twin turbo modification. I bought the car already modified. Very fast (0-60 <4 sec), but you can guess the fuel mileage, even when driving conservatively. It was fairly reliable, but not as good as stock. It was also hard to find someone to reliably work on it (tried 3 different ones). I would recommend staying stock until some of the very salient points above are met. I plan to stay stock this time.

Hey RedRocket, don't you deal with GMP? GMP appears to be the North American rep for speedART. You may be in luck. If nothing else, it's certainly ashiny bunch of parts...

They say, when you buy a boat, you don't drill a hole in it for a year. That way you are sure of what you really want, and what you really need.

A little time I think, will prove worthwhile in deciding on Cayman upgrades as well.

Cheers

I agree when the new E46 M3 came out everyone was looking for the tuning... It takes time and I think everyone here agrees that the car is great the way it comes and 12-18months from now we will all see where this tuning is shaking out. Of course it will be awesome to see the 1st RUF Cayman 3.8......that is what I would love to put my name on if it was not going to be $40k....

I do like the stainless steel exhaust. The standard looks a bit dull through the rear apron. I would worry about upsetting the balance of a car that was so finely balanced.
