Hi Guys I installed a BBI underdrive pulley on my CS.
And have a question...
Since I added the pulley, the sound at idle surges, or pulsates the sound up and down. The sound of the engine is going up and down a little bit.
Is this normal, what causes this, is it harmful to the engine?
Regards
David
Hello David,
I had not installed the underdrive pulley (...yet) but what you are describing is definitely not normal, IMHO is that during installation you pulled (obviously not on purpose) a vacuum hose and now the ECU is 'hunting' for the correct idle mixture... not a biggie but you have to check it out

I just did the install last weekend and I don't remember a vacuum hose anywhere near the pulley, in fact, I don't remember seeing any hoses at all.
+1. We did 3 installs a couple of weeks ago and all 3 cars idled the same after the install as before. There are no hoses or wires in the area to upset.
Pardon my ignorance, but is the underdrive pulley only found on manual cars? What about Tip?
Yes you can put the UDP on Tips also - it is unrelated to the tranny. You might be confusing this with a Lightweight Fly wheel - which only applies to manual trans.

The UDP replaces the stock crank pulley which is attached to the engine. Same parts regardless of tranny. The primary benefit of the UDP is related to track use where the car is driven at sustained high rpm. For street driving it makes little sense, IMO.

Insignificant. I can't feel any difference on the street. A better test will be when I get it on my home track and see if there's any improvement in lap times or rpm at the end of the main straight. At best it's equivalent to the weight difference between driving with a full or half tank of gas or swapping power seats for manual Sport Seats.
More power does not necessarily mean a lot more power. But the butt dyno and G-TIMER did register a small improvement. Each little bit adds up and when it comes to the "poor cousin" CS, it all helps in the end. I have a load of small mods and now Im as fast as a Carrera S

How loose are the belts? Would a slightly shorter belt make sense?
