Is this idea stupid?

First I have to say I do not have the talent/skills to develope this. I am throwing it out to see if it makes sense and to see if there would be enough interest to make it worthwhile for someone to make.

I have noticed at DEs that as soon as most people come off the track they pop the hood on their car so the engine can cool. Unfortunately, with a Cayman this is not so easy so our beloved Cayman are left to stew in their own juices. Would it be worthwhile to have a replacement engine cover that you could put on that was hinged on the side adjacent to the cabin and had a release on the opposite side so that we could open the hatch, reach in and quickly open the engine cover to allow the engine to cool better?

I realize that this would mean more noise and heat in the cabin while driving but this is for the track not for cross country trips. I think it is only 7 screws to change back and forth.

Would this perhaps help with the problem of overheating power steering pumps?

Have I had too much to drink? Do I need medication? What is the meaning of life?

Take a shot at any or all of these questions. Thanks.

How about just programming the ventilation fan to continue running like radiator fans do on some cars. (not sure how either fan(s) work now on Caymans or if there is a temp sensor for engine compartment)

Engine Cooling

When I get off the track (at DEs or AutoX) I will let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes. I think I saw this suggestion in the owners manual? If the engine compartment is too hot, then the fan on the right side intake will kick in to cool it down. That's only happened once to me. It would be nice to be able to manually override this engine bay fan to aid in cooling.

If you have a PIWIS or even the Durametric tester this can be done using the 'Drive Link' facility, it is selected from the DME unit. You do have to have the ignition on and it will only be on whilst you have the test set connected.

FWIW, my coolant temp has remained nicely in the normal range before, during and after DE sessions in 100+ degree temps. I too idle for a few minutes before shutting down and actually use the cool down lap to cool down - minimal brake use and revs under 4k. Over heating hasn't been an issue for me. Has it been a problem for others?

Always park up - on the Level, parking brake off, and allow the motor to run 2-3 minutes as advised, longer if possible............

Anyone know these answers? I too would like to hear more about the fan and what temps the engine bay gets up to.
