Bedding in of new brake pads

I have searched and read. I have printed up the Pagid bed-in sheet. When I went with Pagids for my 2.7, I installed them at the track...but even there it is a bit problematic to follow the bed-in procedure to the letter with other cars on the track.

This time around, I have installed my pads at home. On Friday I will be at the track. If I were to simply drive my car to the track, braking normally on the drive there, what problem will that cause? Any?

What is the best course of action at this point? Any realistic procedure I can do that doesn't include driving 100 mph? Freeway on/off ramps...drive back and forth and get off doing maybe 80...hoping there is no one behind you?

Please don't bother to reply with something like "Pagid pads are not approved for the street."

I just went to a PCA brake tech seminar on Saturday. They suggested going onto the expressway that is not crowded (don't know if that's possible in CA) drive at 80 brake fairly hard to 40 back to 80 to 40. Do that about ten times and you'll be good to go.

Well, perhaps Craig@Rennstore will chime in here (or you could email/pm him for advice), but you might want to read the FAQ and articles about bedding-in pads on the StopTech site for some useful info.

Based on their recommendations, there probably wouldn't be any problem driving to the track at normal speeds/braking, and bedding them in there (they describe how to do that safely as well). The street driving will actually help to abrade the old brake material from your rotors anyway. You just don't want to get your rotors really hot and then apply them at a full stop which could cause glazing.

I guess I'm lucky that there is a long, straight back-country road nearby that doesn't have much traffic, where I can do my bedding procedure.

For the newbie.....what is bedding brakes? Perhaps wearing them in and getting them soft or broken in?

And why? Are they coated with wax or some other product that must be worn away to expose the real resistant surface?

This is how I bedded in the brakes for my M5. Worked great.

Zeckhausen Article

Bedding in is breaking them in and mating the surfaces together with good contact. you just have to make sure you have a long enough road so that you don't have to come to a stop and have the pads sitting in one place on the rotors untill they have time to cool off.

Thanks for the input.

I did repeated 60 mph to 20mph then back to 60 mph. A few 70 and 80s with downhill sections tossed in. I got them hot enough to smell like a runaway trucker on the grapevine. Based upon all I have read, the key is to get the brakes to the right temperature and then let them cool properly. Mission accomplished. They squeak like crazy now, though. And they definitely have a sort of gravelly feel near the ABS threshhold. Is this uneven material on the rotor? I thought they would squeak, but know i am reading that proper bedding will stop squeaks?

Now all I need is a LWFW chattering and an obnoxious exhaust drone to completely undo the work of Porsche's engineering guys. LOL.

By the way, I had crazy amounts of air in my brake lines when I bled them and replaced the fluid with Motul 600. The Motiv gadget from Craig at Rennstore made easy work of the job.

I'll call Craig in the AM and talk to him about my pads and see if I am good to go.

I'm interested in the Pagids pads for my 2.7... (I just had a dealer replace my fronts with OEM's... ). Most of the threads for these pads were for CS's... so I didn't konw if they had such pads for the (slightly) smaller 2.7 brakes.
Do you remember your source and part number??

It's completely normal for track pads to squeal in street driving. They just can't get heated-up enough to work optimally in street conditions.

Rennstore is a great place to buy brake pads. They are a sponsor here and brake pads are their specialty. You won't find better prices or service anywhere. No affiliation.

Squealing & the "gravely" feel are normal for your Pagid (yellows?). I've usually run them on the street for days/weeks before or after track weekends when I don't have time to swap pads. No problems other than the noise and that can be diminished for a while with a few long hard stops.
