As most of us know, one of our illustrious members is having a supercharged 3.8 x51 placed in his Cayman, along with some significant modifications to body and suspension. Does anybody out there have any idea what just a supercharged 3.8 x-51 swap would cost? I'm just planning for the future.
I've gotten quotes to do just a 3.8 X51 swap for under $30k.
Jake, are you planning to do the swap, and if so, who are you looking at to do it? That will make one bad*ss Cayman. My original plan was to do the 3.8L X51 swap, which at around 21 grand sounds like a deal, and then I started wondering how much more a supercharged version would be after reading that one of our members was doing that. I heard around 60 grand, which is almost the price of a new CS. At that price, it would make more sense to look at a Carrera 2. However, the thought of a CS with around 500hp is intriguing. When it comes to Porsche Passion, practicality is hardly a consideration!

I'm seriously thinking about it, although I'm in no hurry. My Cayman is just 4 months old and I want to get some miles on it first. I'm thinking of having Farnbacher-Loles do it. They quoted about $29k. Their 3.8 X51 conversion includes a new exhaust system, a third radiator, and an upgraded clutch and pressure plate.

$26-29k with a new exhaust/clutch and pressure plate, and the front/center radiator is about right.
The EVOMS or iA SC kit for a 3.8 in a 911 is around $12k plus labor. Mine will be the first one they've modded to fit in a Cayman and we're currently leaning towards doing Air to Air intercooling to simplify the install and alleviate some of the space issues. With the body mods planned for my car we'll have plenty of room to incorporate the radiator and the requisite intake though that means we won't be able to do the SC install until AFTER the body is done...

You guys are making me nuts! I figured that it would be prudent to at least use up most of the warranty on the 3.4 (two more years) which would also probably be enough time to see what Porsche might have in store for the CS in terms of power upgrades. But listening to you two is seriously eroding my ability to wait! I would imagine, though, that it will be years before Porsche gives the CS 3.8L performance. What to do, what to do?! Thanks for the great info, guys!
