help installing short shifter

Unfortunately the article section is down and I will be receiving my OEM short shifter today from Sundcoast (thanks Aaron), I am attending a DE event this weekend and would love to have it.

Has someone recently installed a SS, that could describe the step by step on how to install the factory SS?

1) How to remove the gear shift boot and shifter

2) how to remove the center console (location of screws, etc)

3) any tips to avoid damaging the center console

Thank you in advance, Gilles

I recommend that you wait for the articles to come back up. There are actually 2 articles that are useful, one on the center console removal, and the other on the short shift. Be sure to read all the comments in the reviews at the end of the articles before you start - especially the tip from swancoat on removing more of the console to get access to the "impossible screw".

PM K-Man S, maybe he can email you the article. Also, CS Jeff just installed one & said it was pretty painless but he has a 996 C2.

Gilles... look at the B&M instructions on their website. I used that when i put in my SS in the 996. Their instructions reference both 996 & 987. It really is not that difficult, once you know where all the hidden screws are...

If you're anywhere near Silver Spring, MD, you can come over here to do it. I've done a couple, and it'll take an hour, tops.

Otherwise, I echo Fort's advice to wait for the articles to come back up. Basically, anyone writing out all the steps involved would be writing a whole new article.

Google cache is your friend... I've been using the articles section even while its down. Follow these links:

My Articles - Short Shifter Adapted for Cayman - Powered by ReviewPost

My Articles - Painted Center Console Swap - Powered by ReviewPost

One thing to remember, Kmans center console removal article removes the harness from the center console piece by piece, not necessary. There is a master plug located under the a\c controls, visible once you remove the shelf which is pretty much required for the install... unplug the big plug and the wiring harness under the center console is free.

Thanks everyone for the tips, it seems that the hardest part will be removing the console. Tomorrow as soon as I get home I will start looking for the screws to remove the front side panels.
Thanks again, Gilles

If it's the Porsche part, it's pretty straight forward. The B&M is a pain in the neck because you have to modify the OEM shifter cage.

Both can be done by amateurs, but you're not gonna enjoy doing the B&M.

Sunnet,

You are right it was a pretty strait forward job (a couple of hours)

It is incredible how much better the feel of the (OEM) SS is, I never drove before a CS with the SS kit, otherwise I would have done this conversion long time ago

Thanks for the tips and also esaam's detailed mail, this place rocks!
