Porsche Logo Swapout std air-con for automatic air-con aka CC

Hi guys,

I have a boxster 987, but due to the similarities with the Caymen I am hopeing that you will not ignore this message out of hand.

The Boxster has the standard HVAC unit fitted and I was wondering if it is possible to retrofit the auto unit instead and if so what parts and rough costs would be involved ?

Any ideas / advice would be awesome!

Many Thanks

Rob

Well the control unit (the dash part that has the temp. sensor integrated) for the auto climate control is $600. I am pretty sure it's part number 997.653.101.11 if you don't have heated seats and 997.653.111.11 if you do have heated seats.

Now it could be as simple as swapping the unit out and doing some PIWIS coding. But, it's also quite possible the wiring harness will not match because it's option specific... you have a 50\50 chance there.

Now in case the wiring harness does not match, you will have to replace the passenger compartment wiring loom, this carries a retail price of $4042, the part number is 987.612.903.00. It's also VIN specific, so either you'll have to find a VIN of a car with identical options as yours + climate control, or woo somebody at Porsche into thinking your desire of climate control is enough to go to the trouble of making a custom wiring harness.

The part numbers are from the Porsche Parts catalog, you can download it in the files section. Other than that, it's just from the service manual, it explains what connections are in each of the wiring harnesses and discusses coding the control unit with PIWIS; but doesn't talk about changing them so you can't really be sure the wiring harness is different or not. The prices are from renntech.org, they have a retail price search for members that donate.

Also, things that can be retrofitted (short shifter, PCM, etc.) all have TSB's that have retrofit instructions, and yet there isn't one for the climate control, which is another hint that wiring harnesses are probably different.

Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for the info.... that's a bit of a shame that it seems so difficult and / or expensive to swapout the unit. Is there any pictures of the two parts or any other way of telling if the wiring harness is different ?

My untrained eye came to the conclusion that with the exception of the temp sensor the units were probably the same and therefore would have the same connections on the back!

Rob

Rob,

Really the only way of knowing would be to swap the unit out and see what happens... There's no pictures of the back of either unit or the plug out there. If I get a Dension bluetooth adapter, I will have my headunit out so I can take a picture of the back of the climate control unit.

So I guess I'll have to try and get one to see, I have the heated seats so I'll need to bear that in mind. Thanks very much for your help with this, I have another question which I have posted over in the electronics section and would be really grateful if you have any comment on that too!

Thanks again

Rob

Even if the AC head unit is all that is required, and I suspect it is not you will need access to a PIWIS to code the new unit.

Hi, I'm new to this forum and first time on find someone with the same questions that I've been asking here in the UK.

I'm told here that there is no retro fit kit available, I have a similar spec to you Rob with heated seat auto dim mirrors etc but according to the hand book the Cayman's Climate Control system also has a solar sensor to enable it to respond quickly when driving from light to shade and vice versa.
