Which is the best track tire for the Cayman? I will not use it at all on the road, I just want to buy a good set of slick, semi -slick for the track. So things like hydraplanning etc do not matter at all.
For the road I have baught Potenza 01 - R and they are very good and do not wear so much.
More expensive: Michelin Pilot Sport Cups or Pirelli Corsa system, Hoosiers (? available in Europe)
Less expensive: Toyo R888, Nitto NT01

They are nice and sticky but are also more fragile so don't drive them over too many rocks on the road or through any potholes. They loose their grip fairly quickly each time they are heat cycled.
Other R-Compound tires like the Nitto NT01 are not as sticky but are much more durable and maintain their grip quite well until you wear them out. Plus, I've driven on them 2000 miles round trip to Laguna Seca and Thunderhill (3 track days total) on one trip (a VERY FUN trip ).

Quick question on the Nitto's. I just bought my first set and am going to use them in a couple of weeks. Do you and how do you heat cycle the tires before you run them on the track.
The Nitto's were 40 to 45% less than MSCs
From a couple of reviews I read, heat cycling the NT01s isn't as necessary as with other R comps like Hoosiers. When I got mine, I did take them out for a spirited drive to get them hot and scuff them in a little, a couple of days before I took them to the track; I then let them rest for about 36 hours before using them. Here's what Tire Rack recommends in their tech section:
"The first time a competition tire is used is the most important. During that run, its tread compound is stretched, some of the weaker bonds between the rubber molecules will be broken (which generates some of the heat). If the tires are initially run too hard or too long, some of the stronger bonds will also be broken which will reduces the tire's grip and wear qualities. Running new tires through an easy heat cycle first, and allowing them to relax allows the rubber bonds to relink in a more uniform manner than they were originally manufactured. It actually makes them more consistent in strength and more resistant to losing their strength the next time they are used. An important heat cycling step is that after being brought up to temperature, the tires require a minimum of 24 to 48 hours to relax and reform the bonds between their rubber molecules."Tire Rack Tech Information

As for the heat cycles for NT-01s, I drive them to the track the first time, then drive 'em like I stole 'em. I can drive Tucson to Vegas (well, Pahrump, actually), drive 2 hard days at Spring Mountain w/Beez, then drive back to Tucson. I have the tires flipped over on the rims, and I can trailer the car to Deming, NM to drive Arroyo Seco 2 days. I will usually get anothe
