I've seen a lot of discussions about mounting a fire extinguisher in the standard factory position in front of the driver's seat. Has anyone mounted one somewhere else?
I find the factory seat location obtrusive, and since the car won't be used in competition, it's not a requirement for me. My only requirements are that it be not in the way, but should be reasonably accessible. Preferably located in the passenger compartment, perhaps behind the seat, but the front trunk is a second-choice option. I know, there aren't really a lot of places to choose from, and not a lot of places I'd want to drill holes, but maybe someone has already done it... Thanks!
I always wondered why there wasn't a mount on the engine firewall between the seats. This seems like a pretty good location. Isn't it?
To me, a permanent mount there would be a little unattractive for anything other than a pure track car. I've thought that a removable mount that attaches to the luggage bar between the seats would be a good alternative.
There is also plenty of space on the floor behind the passenger seat to mount one, but it would be harder to get at if there was actually someone sitting in the seat.

I don't care about access while inside the car; my idea is just to have it reasonably handy after stopping the car and jumping out, without having it in the way or in my face all the time. Behind the seat is good, if I knew how or where to attach it.

Well I tried my 2 mounts (MantisSport and SpeedTactics) which are designed to use the front seat rail bolts, to see how they might fit on the rear seat rail bolts, behind the passenger seat. The tabs on the SpeedTactics mount (see picture below) are too short to extend past the ends of the rails. The corresponding tabs on the MantisSport are too long, though with some cutting and bending, I could probably get it to fit back there.
You could probably fabricate something similar yourself (or have it cut for you by a metal shop) to utilize the rear seat bolts and the space at the bottom back of the seat.

What would you do with a fire extinguisher?
The engine is almost totally enclosed, so no possibility to get to it, except if the car was upside down, in which case it would be totalled..... and if your fuel in the front tank is ablaze, there is no way a small extinguisher would help.
Better to have a set of running shoes handy, to 'Get the Hell Out of There.....
There are lots of things you can do with a fire extinquisher. You might use it to help someone else, or to beat back a fire long enough to get someone out of your car. The fire you find might not necessarily be _in_ your car. It might not even involve a car. I've carried a fire extinguisher for 20 years, and haven't used it yet, which is a trend I hope to continue. But you never know...
I see you guys are tossing around ideas here about were to mount the fire extinguisher. Since I'm new to the forum and a new sponsor I thought I would chime in. The reason we made our FEB to fit on the front seat rails is to make it easily accessible (driver side and passenger side). If for any reason you were in a accident and were trapped in the car and a fire broke out....... well better safe than sorry. In some cases you may not be able to get out of the car or reach behind you. The mount on the front seat rails once installed is very minimal and you hardly notice it. If you stay with a small bottle it's so far under your legs it's never in the way.
Also if you plan on doing any track driving you have to have a fire extinguisher mounted within reach, if your in 5 point harnesses you cant reach far at all.
This mounting takes about 5 minutes 10 if your not mechanically inclined, basically two bolts on and off. You could remove it for those special date nights if you want. You'll find that after a while you don't even notice the fire extinguisher. Let me know if you have any questions or feedback.
Also we are selling Halotron fire extinguishers now on our site.

If you ever crash your car and watch it go up in flames you may change your tune on that.

As pointed out, many PCA zones require that you have a fire extinguisher mounted to metal within reach of the driver seat in order to participate in track events. Not all do, but I know mine does (Connecticut Valley Region).
Check with your insurance company too. Some give discounts if your car is equipped with an extinguisher.
I have a Brey Krausse driver seat mount similar to the one shown above. Honestly, the one above tucks up closer to the seat than mine. I've bumped my foot into my extinguisher once or twice while getting in or out, otherwise you'd never know it was even there. And if you really don't want to see or carry it you could always take the extinguisher and extinguisher mount off until your next track event. Once the seat mount is in there, taking the extinguisher mount off or putting it back on would take all of 5 minutes with a Phillips head screw driver.
