De-Snork and K & N Install. Results.

I know many of you have differing opinions of both the de-snork mod and the k & n (or the like) filters.

Over the last week I've leisurely done both mods and buttoned the car back up. The mods were very easy, getting the grille off the car to de-snork and getting the air filter slid on were the 2 hardest parts. Other than that, very easy.

Results: Sound is different, to be sure I had recorded a clip at idle and at WOT before and after, definately more raspy, definately sounds crisper, deeper roar at WOT.

Performance is unquestionably improved. We used a G-tech Competition meter on the car before and after. Temperature was actually 15F hotter on the after run with over 20% higher humidity, runs were both done on the same stretch of road with the same driver. The method was to make 3 full 1/8 mile pulls and use the average, letting the car cool a bit between runs.

After everything we've determined that there was at least a .2 second difference in the 1/8mi, with a maximum gain of .4 seconds. Once you convert that to a 1/4mi you'll see that is a tremendous gain for such a small amount of work that has virtually no possible downside (other than a bit more noise).

If there would have been no gain, I would have posted that as well. I have no vested interest in K & N or any gutter screen company, either.

I hope this info is useful to some of you. Your mileage may vary.

It would seem that that the increase is not due to the desnork as numerous folks seem to have disproven any substantial performance increase. (perhaps a few HP meaning <5HP). So other variables must apply, such as the K&N or the change in weather or change in your enthusiastic driving/shifting.

I have not desnorked, so I cannot verify one way or the other. I am a stickler for keeping the car pretty much stock. I admit I may go for the Borla exhaust, and Denison Ipod and Blue tooth adapters.

I'd have to agree that there was no noticed gains with either de-snork or k&N. However, the car sounds great.

These mods in my opinion gain you nothing. However your behavior and the way you drive may indeed reflect what you anticipate gaining and there you go....

Jrcmic

There will always be the doubters .And it always seems to come from the people that dont do the mods or do not seem to find the PROVEN dyno results K&N +5 HP and a Dyno graph done on 6speedonline showing 6 HP increase with the De-snorkel If you have an aftermarket Exhaust then these numbers will be greater so Jrcmic all the more power to ya . Ignore the na sayers this is a Inexpensive and fun mod that adds power and sound to an already great car. I have noticed the sound and power increase and its not my driving . I am not driving faster its real and its there .Keep up the Modding we are with you

Somehow I had a feeling that some folks might say things like this because it doesn't agree with what they believe. The results are what they are, hotter temp and higher humidity do not equal _quicker_, they equal _slower_ almost always. All runs were very aggressive, shifting slightly faster a couple of times does not equal 8 tenths in the 1/4.

Just had another track day and can honestly say that 8 tenths wouldn't have made me have anymore fun. Unless you're driving for a living...8 tenths get's you where faster? Speaking of driving for a living...these IndyCar drivers are flying down in Texas!!!

It's not really about what the extra power is good for, it's about the fact that it DID make more power with those 2 very inexpensive and easy mods. Truth be told, 8 tenths is probably high as I doubt that you'd realize that much of a gain in the 1/4, but even .5 is plenty of HP to notice.

I doubt that I would enjoy a track day anymore just because of .5 seconds...but that's not really what I was getting at.

I know it's ballpark but isn't .1 in a 1/4 rougly = 1 car length?

Distance is fixed it depends on the ET of the run.

5280 Feet/4 = 1320 Feet

ET = 12 seconds
Distance / Second = 110ft/sec
0.1 * 110ft = 11ft.

ET = 10 Seconds
Distance / Second = 132ft/sec
0.1 * 132ft = 13.2ft.

To a top fuel car 0.1 seconds is almost 30ft with low ETs in the mid 4 seconds.

ETC...

Does your car have similar weight on both occasion? For example similar tank full of gas? In addition to ET, did you record any improvement in the trap speed?

I believe intake mods add HP, but can't be captured by chassis dyno because when the car accelerates through air, slightly more compressed air enters into the manifold that increases volumetric efficiency. Measuring 1/4 mi trap speed is the best way to confirm hp enhancement.

I was sure to keep the tank at 1/2 full for all runs, give or take a small variation ( I didn't measure the gallons). I weighed the same (too much) on all runs. Trap speed increased, but only a couple mph in the 1/8, perhaps on full 1/4 pulls the trap speed gain could have been realized fully.

I was sure to keep as many variables in check as possible to get the most accurate results. I'm not new to racing and have a race car in my garage, quantifying gains due to mods is not new to me.
