Full cost to upgrade to XPA steering wheel after purchase?

I've seen that the wheel itself is $1389 from Suncoast, but does anyone know the price for the Sport steering wheel airbag and what the labor charges would be to do the swapout? I'm assuming that with the airbag and labor we're probably right around $3K, but don't know for sure.

I had no issues with the thickness of the wheel in my Boxster or my CS, but after driving my wife's Audi for awhile it's just painful to have to go back to the pencil-thin standard Cayman wheel…

Assuming you do not have PCM and multi function wheel , swapping out the standard triangular airbag wheel with a sport one will require a new wheel and also a new airbag. The wheels often come up on e bay , it's the airag that is expensive to buy and hard to find used. The alternative is to have your existing wheel recovered and padded , this costs about 600 usd and can be done by alan gun who advertises on e bay. He is based in the USA so there should be no issues for you in shipping. Personally I went the route of a techart wheel which cost a little over 2000 usd. Look on rennteam.com and search under XPA or steering wheel , there is a gallery of all the wheel types in the thread. Swapping the wheel itsel is simple to do and can be done yourself with a few tools and a bit of guidance. It takes about 30 mins to swap a wheel over.

Nope, no coding or other computer changes required. That is, as long as you're not replacing a multifunction wheel.

The swap is very straight forward. Just make sure to disconnect the battery and wait at least one minute before removing/disconnecting the airbag -- gives the electronics a chance to discharge, minimizing the risk of accidental explosion/inflation.

Also, the torque on the steering wheel center bolt is 37 ft-lbs. Use some blue loctite on the bolt, as well (Porsche recommends always using a new bolt because the bolt comes pre-treated with thread locking compound, but blue loctite is stronger than what comes on the bolt).

Thanks.

For those who haven't seen it, Suncoast now has the airbag module as well, bringing the cost of wheel and airbag to a bit under $2,000, leaving installation as the only remaining big hit if you have a dealer do it.

Though one might be able to get rid of the standard wheel on eBay, the old airbag might be a bit more difficult as it requires hazardous material shipping due to the explosives inside.

There's got to be a market for them, though, given how much theft there is of airbag modules…
