19" SD Wheels, Painted Black for my CS

After seeing the picture of this GT3-Green CS from another thread...

http://www.caymanclub.net/news-items...tml#post273834

...I'm thinking about getting those exact wheels for mine. I have an '07 Guards Red CS with the 18" CS wheels.

I've searched the forum for a while to try and find some direct information (as well as a general search via Google) and I'm having a hard time finding info. I know that Porsche doesn't make these exact wheels available for this year (for some reason, Black is not an option for painted the 19" SD wheels on the online configurator for the CS). I'm sure a set will set me back a few K, but I'm wondering if I'd be able to order these directly (from somewhere?), or would I have to order/buy a set, non-painted, and paint them myself/have someone do it (would rather buy them professionally done). I did see the set of standard 19" SD wheels for a CS in the classifieds.

Oh, and I want to maintain the TPMS.

I think you'll just have to buy a set of wheels and paint them (or have them painted). Any decent body shop should be able to paint the wheels for you.

All you need to maintain the TPMS functionality is a set of TPMS transmitters. You might even be able to buy a set of used wheels that have the transmitters already installed. Otherwise, you can buy them from a dealer or from Tire Rack, they aren't that expensive.

I had my SD wheels powder coated after delivery. My dealer set the whole thing up and it took place prior to me taking possession of the car. I DID have the option of ordering painted SD wheels directly from Porsche though. My salesman convinced me that having it done after delivery would be cheaper and give me the option of going with powder coating rather than paint. The shop owner is the one who convinced me to go with powder coating. Although it was slightly more expensive he felt that the more durable finish was worth the added expense. I paid just over $1k to have the work done. You can see pics of mine here: EBITDA's Images - Cayman Club Gallery

You should be able to get them painted pretty easily by most body shops. Finding someone in your area to powder coat them might be a bit more difficult.

I also think I would powder coat them. I agree that buying them then powder coating them would likely be the best option.

Powdercoating is more durable than having them painted, drop a lugbolt on paint and you're liely to chip it. I'm having my stock 18's done locally in a black chrome finish for the track at $60 each, and then add $35 each for remounting and balancing.

This forum is chocked full of information on painting vs powdercoating. There is a place called fastforwardwheelsdotcom where they do this. I was considering white but white SD wheels would be so hard to keep clean.

I recently got my 2008 CS and had my local dealer get their Panel Shop powder coat my wheels which wasn't cheap however the effect is as good as the factory painting at less than half the cost.

I saw a Porsche magazine ad of a light blue 997 w/ black SD just at the spokes, with the outer perimeter of the rim in stock silver. Looked really nice. I wonder if spoke-only or entire wheel blacked out looks better.

I like the perimeter silver rim look.

Silver Trim

I like the look of the silver trim on the outside of the rim also. In fact, on the Porsche build-your-own, I believe they show it with silver trim around the rim. When I was odering mine I think I had to use the build-your-own on the Canadian site because the US site didn't allow you to choose an alternating rim color.

However, on the SD wheels, every other spoke actually extends into the outside ring of the rim. I would think this would make it pretty difficult to paint and I'm not sure if powder coating spokes only is even possible (don't know enough about the powder coating process).

I had my stock CS 18"s painted gloss black. Powder coating is stronger, but won't give you a smooth surface. I had them done 5 months ago...so far no chips. But I'm a moderate driver.
