Got a guy who's an independent Porsche/BMW/Benz mechanic. His personal cars include a '78 911 Turbo (dyno'd at 410 hp at the wheels) and a 2002 Ti Alpina and another 2002 racer. He has opined to me that an easy way to get good sound out of my car is to simply drill a large bore hole, longitudinally, through each muffler, effectively creating a straight pipe! Has anyone ever done this? On a Cayman? Will all of the muffler guts come spewing out the exhaust? If ever done, what does sound like? Drone? Shake, rattle and roll?

I wouldn't drill into my exhaust system, but I would consider the free exhaust mod posted elsewhere in this forum. I think you need a couple of basic tools to slide open the connector pipe between the mufflers. Many people report a better sound, but some have complained about headaches after a few drives with the mod. You should be able to search for it. I'm only afraid to do this mod because I will get addicted to a better sound and then need to go aftermarket for a whole new exhaust to satisfy my addiction. Now where did I put those exhaust comparison videos...
The mod you mention was SOP for probably 90% of Harley Davidson motor cycles through the mid 1990s. Simply insert a lenght of metal pipe up each of the exhaust pipes, bang away with a mallet and punch out the baffles. Worked great. Around 1996 HD introduced catalytic imbedded exhausts (along with fuel injection) which ended the practice.
I would not attempt this on my CS, but I'm as mod adverse on my cars as I'm mod friendy on my motor cycles.

IIRC, Harley introduced the catalyzed mufflers in 2006, not 1996. Also, Harley introduced fuel injection in 1998 (Magneti Marelli system) on certain models, and then switched to the current Delphi-produced systems around 2002. I believe all the current HD models are fuel injected, no more carburetors.
Please let him do, whatever his heart desires...............
Spoken like another of Irish decent. Know Deelys in PA.
I'm not at all sure I want to do this at all. Once my wallet allows, I'll spring for a Borla system with a Softronic flash, IPD plenum and an EVO intake. I think that would just about do it for me.
Plenum
The plenum is the piece that goes between the Cayman throttle body and the intake runners. The factory piece is a long black plastic tube with a divider down the middle. There are aftermarket replacements which are designed to allow the air to flow easier/faster into the engine and increase horsepower and torque.
Softronic
SOFTRONIC produces DME programming and hardware to suit your companies specifications. Our current software suite is a complex matched set of programs housed in a Flash Manager and Flash Client. This software is matched with two cables, an End User and Master Cable. The SOFTRONIC proprietary flashing solution outperforms all other combinations in speed and accuracy including the factory Porsche equipment.
Borla
BORLA PERFORMANCE INDUSTRIES is the leader in the design and manufacture of stainless steel performance exhaust. We began two decades ago as a manufacturer of exhaust systems for such "concours classics" as Rolls-Royce and Ferrari cars and have evolved into the premier manufacturer of today’s performance vehicles for the street, off-road, and racing.
