Given that I was not too happy with the performance of the Tiptronic S transmission, I decided to upgrade my ECU/DME unit with the
Softronic software + Sports Mode ON package. The
Softronic cable has arrived next day to my door, however I was unable to start the upgrade due to lack of time. So next day morning 5:30AM I downloaded the software of their website, connected the cable to the laptop, turned the ignition on and successfully uploaded my current OEM configuration/software to
Softronic. In about 30 min., which was around 6:30am, I received an e-mail with the customized software. Unfortunately, I didn't have time until later on that night to try and upload the upgrade. Here is how it went:
1. Connected the car to the battery charger
2. Connected the laptop to the power outlet
3. Checked if I have network connectivity (wireless), which appeared to be OK
4. Turned on the ignition and started the upload process
My garage sounded like it's housing a fighter jet with the fans blowing.
5. The upgrade was in progress, which appeared to be going OK until about 95%, when I received a write error, asking me to power down and start over. So, I did.
6. Upon restarting the upgrade, the instrument cluster light up like a Xmas tree.
PSM failure, Airbag failure, Check Engine, etc., and the fans were at full speed.
7. At this point I figured, I'll call
Softronic (11PM) and leave them a message. To my surprise Scott picked up the phone and was ready to help. He spent about an hour trying to troubleshoot the problem, which appeared that has left my ECU/DME unit at a state, which could not be repaired with the standard
Softronic software and my laptop in hand.
8. Scott has requested that we call it a night and he will call me next day morning, which he did. He has informed me that over night he has prepared a loaner ECU/DME unit for me, which he has already shipped via Fedex.
9. So, I needed to remove my ECU/DME and ship it to Scott after the loaner ECU/DME unit arrives. While I was a bit disappointed of the failure of the upgrade, I was very impressed with Scott's dedication and service.
10. Next day, the loaner ECU arrived with the new upgraded program and my car was up and running again. A few days later my repaired ECU was sent back, which I installed and everything works just fine.
The car feels more responsive and the Tiptronic transmission with the Sports Mode On also has improved.
As a conclusion,
Softronic stood by their product and provided the best support service you can get when things don't go as advertised.

PSM - Porsche Stability Management
|
 |
While it can’t overcome the laws of physics, the revolutionary Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system does lend an added degree of balance and control to the Cayman’s mid-engine driving dynamics, inspiring surefooted confidence in corners and extreme situations.
A standard feature on the Cayman and Cayman S, PSM continuously monitors steering input, road speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration to calculate the actual direction of travel. If the car begins to steer off line, PSM instantly intervenes with precision brake inputs on individual wheels to help bring the car back onto the driver’s intended path.
If braking alone isn’t enough to correct the vehicle’s cornering line, PSM then calls on the Cayman’s engine management system, adjusting engine output as needed to help stabilize handling. PSM can also compensate in an instant for mid-corner changes in load resulting from deceleration or braking. When Sport mode is selected with the optional Sport Chrono Package, PSM’s threshold for intervention is raised, allowing for greater driver involvement. If you prefer driving without automatic PSM assistance, the system can be set to standby at any time. In this case, it will only intervene under heavy braking, where both front wheels exceed the ABS threshold.
For all of its technical ability, PSM goes virtually unnoticed in everyday driving situations, preserving the Cayman’s natural agility. |
