AWE 1st Generation question

A newbie so bare with me.. I bought an 06 that has had the AWE exhaust installed. I cant imagine this car without it! Sound is amazing except-

When at idle, there seems to be back pressure and causes an annoying puttering sound. When I start to move (1st gear) the noise begins to sound like an exhaust leak. Soon as you get rolling, the puttering goes away and all sounds normal. I have check for leaks and feel confidant there are none.
Is this normal? or should I have AWE look at it?
Thx

What you're describing does not sound "normal", unless by normal you mean the same type of problem that developed for many other first gen owners.

AWE replaced many (most? nearly all?) of their first gen systems under warranty. Not sure whether the warranty covers you once the car's been sold.

Thanks for the input...
The privious owner did have an issue with AWE which resulted in a replacement. It had several leaks in the welds. This sound is more of a design issue I think.. I will contact AWE to see what can be done..
Thx

At very low RPM there is a puttering/burble sound in the AWE, especially when it's installed too low. The exhaust hanger needs to be preloaded; see the modifications articles section for Gatorbites section as he explains how to do this and also Adax has an article that addresses this.

Exhaust leaks are typically a loud metallic clicking sound when the metal is cold, especially apparent around 2,500-3000 rpm in the AWE exhaust. When the leak opens up it will be present even after the exhaust heats up.

You can check what version you have by looking at the cans and seeing if there are two welded bracing rods in each exhaust or probably by calling AWE and giving them the serial number.

Suneet beat me to it. He's right on the money. What you are describing sounds like a vibration caused by too little or too much preload. See my install article, step 13.

If you would like to determine whether or not your system was replaced with a 2nd gen system, take a look at this post so you can tell the difference. Once you know those difference, hit your knees behind your car and you will be able to identify the vintage pretty easily.

The system does sound nice, doesn't it.....?

Gator Bite/Suneet,
Update: Regarding 2nd gen.. I called AWE and talked to John. When I asked about my SN, John stated that they dont keep track that way.. I found that odd..

Regarding the "sound". I preloaded per GB's post. No change. The sound is definitely not a vibration but rather a soft puttering that is really hard to explain. AWE did send me to a local dealer for them to check out. Will be dropping by tomorrow for the "sound check".

Thanks for the response as it was very helpful.
Thx
