Leather (XPA) Sports Steering Wheel Part #

My search results returned plenty of info about the XPA wheel, but I did not see any reference to its part number.

I've found part # 997.347.804.41. FOK and a text description stating "black leather sports steering wheel" but no picture to back it up. From some of the other posts it sounded like there is a difference between the "leather sports wheel" and the "leather XPA sports wheel", is this true?

If so if anyone knows which item the above part number references I'd really appreciate the help .

Thanks,
Bruce

See our FAQ's for descriptions of the leather sports wheel and XPA wheel The Cayman Club - FAQ: Cayman Options

Suggest calling or website of one of our Porsche sponsors to get the part number. Suncoast for example.

The FAQ is incomplete in showing all steering wheel options on the Cayman. There is an option called CPA, this is a "thicker leather" steering wheel option for $940. My car came with it. I think I would have rather had the Sport steering wheel as its overall circumferance is smaller. The leather is very soft and indeed thicker but the circumferance is too large much like the standard steering wheel.

Yep - the "Thicker Leather Steering Wheel" option is missing from the options FAQ.

It's the same wheel as the standard wheel but is covered in thicker leather.

It's the same thickness as the thick XPA wheel but the wheel has the standard "triangular" shape so the airbag from the standard steering wheel would work with it.

Anyone got a source for these? Suncoast only carries the XPA and GT3 wheels.

So...I did some research

I'm actively looking to buy a sports steering wheel for my car, but wanted to be sure that I don't get the wrong one by purchasing online. Theres a large price variance and if pictures are the only thing to go by, it seems pretty easy to get confused.

Below is a fairly comprehensive parts list for the steering wheels available for the 987/997 cars, I've tried to group them according to part number and the approximate (aftermarket) price:

Part#---------------Option (ours)/(???)---------Description

$700-$750
997.347.804.40 FOA --I435/I480--Sports steering wheel leather embossed black

997.347.804.51 FOS --I460/I249--Sports steering wheel plain leather brown nat

-------------------------------end of wheel list----------------------------

One thing I noticed is that the first 3 sections of the part number are identical accross all variations. What really makes the difference is the final 2 digits and the 3 letter designation. Also of note, I do not know if the "full leather" XPA wheel is on this list, I've emailed suncoast hoping they could provide me with that info, but haven't heard back yet.

After putting this together I've come up with some other questions, and if anyone has the answers I'm all ears.

Questions:
  1. Looking above, when the final 2 digits of the part number are .40 or .50 it shows as option 435 when the final 2 are .41 or .51 the option shown is 460. Seeing this, when we add these options in at time of purchase (435 or 460), which of the above come installed?

  2. What is the difference between .40 and .50? (435) both are leather embossed, but what justifies the .50 increase in price?
  3. What is the difference between .41 and .51? (460) both are plain leather, but again, what makes .51 cost more?
I'm wondering if the price variation has something to do with the "thicker" option that BillK mentioned above?

Hey Blitz,

Here's a breakdown of the options shown in the list above hopefully it will clear some stuff up for you:

435: Sport Wheel (Round airbag. I don't know why the .41's and .51's don't specify being a sport wheel, but they are).

480: 6 Speed Manual Transmission

249: Tiptronic Transmission (hence the higher price on the .50's and .51's).

460: Premium Leather (Touch + Feel Package)

None of the wheels listed above are a thicker XPA wheel, just the sport wheels (round airbag as opposed to standard wheels, with the triangular airbags). The XPA (thicker sport) wheel part numbers are 997.347.980.00 + color code. When looking at these wheels in the catalog, "480" is still manual transmission, but now "432" is Tiptronic (with a corresponding ~$70 price increase for Tips).

I hope you're not more confused than you were before!

-Steve

Ohh, and the CPA wheels that Bill referred to are the thicker standard (triangular airbag) wheels, which, as far as I know, are not available for purchase (only as an Exclusive option on a new car).

The only standard thicker/padded steering wheel is the Tequipment Alcantara wheel.

Take a look at our steering wheel page to see a pretty comprehensive list of the wheels available for the Cayman.

Thanks Steve,

Your input really cleared up all the unknown about the 2nd part of the option code. (480 vs 249). And also the XPA wheel number! I really appreciate the reply .
