Exclamation CEL on after installation of fabspeed Headers!!

Hi guys,

Installed my fabspeed headers for a month, the CEL came on during a normal day of cruising around in town. As i Didnt track the car with the headers, so im sure its not the abuse of tracking which prompt the CEL to come on.

Would like to know if any other owners in the forum faced the same problem? Hope to hear a solution from Fabspeed too as this set is suppose to the 2nd-gen headers which will not prompt a CEL.

will remove the headers to check in-case of a catalyic melt-down..will post update tomorrow when i return from the workshop.

Hoping for a reply form fabspeed......

Crazzie80 email joey@fabspeed.com after you return from the shop. I can further assist you regarding any problems with the headers.

I also had the same issue this weekend after the fabspeed install - then I flashed the ECU with the Softronic application and it went away...I'm very interested to see what they say...

I've had the same problem with my Fabspeed headers - twice. Had the Gen 1 headers installed last year and the cats melted down giving a CEL and limp mode. Fabspeed replaced the headers with a Gen 2 set under warranty. Same problem - cats melted CEL, etc. I just went back to the OEM set-up as I've given up on the Fabspeeds. I do track the car a lot, but the cats should last longer than they have. Not sure if I'll go with another aftermarket header. YMMV.

I am aware of 2 other CaymanClubbers who have experienced catalyst failures on their Gen 2 Fabspeed headers after a fairly short time in service. I encourage them both to post their experiences on the Caymanclub.

I think there was a good post from Todd@AWE. Metallic cats are not good enough to withstand the abuse, you need ceramic cats, and there are no high-flow ceramic cats in the market. That's why I've gone for catless. With Softronic, no CEL.

all these questions which prompt me to think through abt fabspeed issues, came back from my workshop, they told me that the cats are in still working condition but my engine is in limp mode. Will take them down and drive without the cats..if there is no problem..maybe i will go down the cargrahic way like titanic too..

The workshop have been handling the cup cars in the carrera series, they nv seen before cats causing so much problem.

So im thinking, wat now for fabspeed? any answers or solutions? Is it because the O2 sensors are too close to the cats, causing too high temp or the cats is suppose to be ceramic like titanic is saying...

What are the fault codes? Cylinder misfires? If it is, check sparkplugs and coil.

Actually the race cats are stainless wash coated cats and not ceramic. The ceramic cats are the ones that will always tend to fail from track use or continued high rpms. This is from the heat and vibration that breaks the ceramic loose and then it will continue to come apart. These are used in the factory Porsche 987 and 997 street cars and in all aftermarket exhaust systems to my knowledge.

The ceramic cats will cause misfires in that specific bank when they start to come apart. The main issue otherwise with Sport or 200 or less cell cats on the 987 and 997 cars is the cat efficiency. The factory 400 cell are kept in such a close spec that the CEL will be lit when using the Sport or lower cell cats. . Some manufactures have changed this a bit by increasing the 200 cell surface area by lengthening the cats.

Best,
Scott Slauson
